Fayetteville police today began a two-day directed traffic enforcement campaign on College Avenue between North Street and Millsap Road.
Officers in marked and unmarked vehicles are scheduled to monitor traffic in the area on Monday, Jan. 28 and Tuesday, Jan. 29, according to a news release.
“The goal of the department is to bring awareness to drivers regarding traffic collisions and hopefully reduce the number of accidents on N. College Avenue,” the release stated.
Officers will be looking for the following violations:
- Distracted driving
- Following too close
- Improper use of center lane
- Failure to yield
- Failure to signal turn or lane changes
- Improper right/left turn
- Disobeying traffic signals
They’ve stepped up enforcement around the entire town for several weeks now unannounced. I’ve seen more police officers throughout this city lately than I have in my entire life here.
Everyone needs to be wary, they’re sitting in the locations where College Ave’s speed limit drops from 40 mph to 35 mph and I’ve seen four people pulled over in a matter of two trips down College Ave.
I saw three vehicles pulled over by three different motorcycle patrol officers at the same time between Sycamore and Township at about 8:15 a.m. today.
good! people drive like a-holes on college. hope this makes it safer.
I like it. Drop the speed limit to 30 for all I care.

30′s too low for college, but there are many residential streets that should be lowered to 20 from 25.
Counted 12 people getting pulled over in 3 hours in the Evelyn Hills parking lot. I almost got rear-ended by someone following too close while i was coming in to work this morning. Let’s have more of this, and someone full time at College and Joyce while we’re at it.
Someone who wrote a nice check for Jordan’s re-election will squawk when their 16 yr old gets a ticket and the FPD will quit. Happens every time they try to enforce traffic laws.

There is NO eU-turn nforcement at College and Joyce. 600 tickets a day could be written there. But, oh, that’s politics, not changing lanes without a signal, the #1 money maker in Fayetteville, for police and lawyers.
There is no sign stating UTurns are illegal at that intersection, in fact I have seen patrol cars U-turn there right behind other cars. If they really wanted to make money they would put in red light cameras at that intersection. Those cameras would pay for themselves after a couple of days with all of the people that run those lights
Red light cameras do make money, for the company paid to operate them. Cities don’t really see much in the way of increased revenue though.
Red light cameras also result in an increase of accidents (particularly rear end collisions) as people will stop suddenly to not risk running the light rather than continue through (exacerbated by shortened yellows).
Except in very limited circumstances, Arkansas law does not allow the use of red light cameras to issue citations. Even when allowed, a cop needs to be present to issue an immediate citation.

I was pulled over, last time they did this…ended up being 30 minutes late back to work. No ticket issued, as I had been pulled over for “distracted driving”, but was not actually violating any law. I have no idea what he was talking about, I don’t use the phone while driving or anything, all he would say is that I was “looking down”. Funny, that he saw enough “distraction” to justify pulling me over, as I only saw him turn out behind me about 30 seconds before I was pulled over. Sounds like an excuse to me, to try to find any issue with your insurance or liscense, and generate some revenue from tickets. It’s harrassment, plain and simple. Fine, if someone is violating a law and driving unsafe, pull them over – but such a loose definition of an offense being used as an excuse to detain someone is a rather slippery slope, I think.
I got pulled over this week on college for no seatbelt (which of course I should have been wearing).
This was right after I got a parking ticket.
