Man accidentally shoots self at KUAF radio station in downtown Fayetteville
A man accidentally shot himself in the hand inside the University of Arkansas’ KUAF radio station building on Friday.
According to UA officials, a work-study student employed at KUAF wounded his hand a little after 12:30 p.m. when a handgun he had in his day pack discharged. The student was in the station’s breakroom, and no one else at the station was injured. The student’s wounds were described as non-life-threatening.
University police received a call about the shooting at 12:36 and responded to the scene by 12:42, according to a statement on the university’s website. Fayetteville police also responded to the incident. The pistol was described by police as one designed to fire .410 shotgun shells.
According to the statement, the student was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center for non-life-threatening wounds to his hand.
KUAF is located at 9 S. School Ave. in downtown Fayetteville across from the Fayetteville Public Library.

Yesterday (Thursday, Feb. 8th) Ozarks at Large had a segment on gun control. Did the student have his firearm with him for that reason???
Anybody who totes a weapon around in a backpack knows they shouldnt have it at that time/location, or isnt properly trained to even handle such a weapon. Sounds like a gang banger.
I have the pleasure of knowing the student who shot himself. This was nothing to do with gun control or potential campus shootings. What it boils down to is that the person in question is and idiot. No – not for bringing the gun to school – he is a real life idiot. Ex – stoner without much common sense. He’s a smart and funny guy…but isn’t all there. Trust me, he didn’t really think this through. I’ve seen the gun in question in person – I guarantee all he was doing was showing it off as a new toy.
I’m sure he hasn’t a clue, then, about what a false friend you make.
Just because this person knows the guy doesn’t mean they are friends.
Dont blame the weed, dude.
No he is not a “gang banger” far from it in fact.
nice try girlfriend of guy who shot his hand off. totally a gangbanger
It’s too bad he wasn’t armed. He could have protected himself.
He is well versed in weapons he hadn’t even fired that one yet. As for why it was loaded that I don’t know.
Apparently not that well versed. I would say poorly versed.
Well versed??
That is perfect gun sense. Lets go buy a gun, never shoot it, load it, then tote it around downtown in a backpack? There’s no way it could be mishandled.
The fool (and lets notmisinterpret, today he was a fool) messed up and you shouldn’t be defending his actions.
well find out and tell us girlfriend!
Unfortunately this guy did many things wrong. A loaded firearm should lot be loose or carried in an unsafe manner that could allow it to fire accidentally. A firearm was not allowed in this location, if it is on the U of A campus. Breaking the law if so. I am glad to hear he did not injure anyone else… I will leave it at that.
“…he hadn’t even fired that one yet…”
At least now he knows it works….
and by saying “that one” i assume this guys has more guns, which is scary for anyone around him..
It was loaded because he put a bullet in it.
Guns don’t wake up at night while your asleep and put bullets in themselves.
Actuall it was a 410 round, so it’s called a shell not a bullet. Just playing, but seriously.
Wow, this poor kid just ain’t that smart!
natural selection at work…
“Poor kid?” More like reckless dipshiat.
more guns, more accidents. do the math.
No guns in public places.
He wasn’t allowed to have a gun there, so he broke the law. The no guns in public places argument doesn’t really have a leg to stand on in this case.
Do you understand that a man accidentally shot himself with a gun that he brought to a public place?
Yes, which was on UofA property? If that is the case you are not allowed to have guns their, so he broke the law.
Ta Da!!!
This is the gun he shot himself with. This commercial is hilarious.

Lol. Made me think of the song Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock. You know the song….from his epic funk jazz album, Head Hunters.
“Stupid is as stupid does” never made more sense…
RE “The student’s wounds were described as non-life-threatening.”
That’s really a shame. Some people need to learn the difference between a real threat to one’s life and an imaginary threat to one’s life.
Why aren’t there solar panels on the roof of that building?
I love how the gunnies always have an excuse…
I live how lefties always want to take stuff away from people.
*love
Nobody’s taking your guns away, homeslice. We’d just prefer that you keep them in your house, away from our families and friends. Like this, you can “protect” yourself, “defend” your home against enemies foreign and domestic, and kill all the cute deer your heart desires. And, when your gun discharges accidentally, you will only shoot your own dang hand off.
Your not going to get your wish on that one. You would be surprised how many people have a gun on them most of the time. I am a gun guy and am for tighter background checks, even though I know it will not solve any gun violence. Most guns used in crimes are not bought legally, see Newtown for example, those guns used were stolen. I know it was from his mother, but they were still stolen. As for “assault rifles”, technically those are illegal to own. Assault weapons are fully automatic and you have to have a class three license to own one and they are hard to acquire. You are talking about semi-auto weapons. I personally have 4 or 5 like this, but none of them look like an m-16, so they are fine? They all look like old time hunting rifles and that’s what they are used fore. As for clips lets face it, you can easily take two ten round ones tape the together and basically have a 20 round clip, see See Call of Duty. Folks guns are here to stay, especially in the south, it’s part of our culture down here. When I got out shooting my friends and we will shoot hundreds of rounds in a day. My suggestion to folks is, find someone you know that goes shooting and ask to go along sometime. Learn how guns work and learn how to be safe with one. This kid broke the golden rule of not playing with you gun “also broke the law”, guns are not toys and he was treating it as one. I am on my phone Tao hope there wasn’t to many misspellings.
Your math is right, 10+10 does indeed equal 20, but two 10 round clips are not basically the same as a 20 round clip. Even if you do have them taped together it still takes a few seconds to reload (about 1 in CoD, but certainly a few more in real life) as well as requiring the shooter divert his attention. These seconds could allow someone to subdue the shooter. I have no desire to see guns taken away, nor do I see the difference between an assault weapon and a semi-automatic hunting rifle so long as the assault weapon doesn’t have significantly hire fire rate. What I do think should be regulated is fire rate and clip size. If you’re a hunter and need rapid-fire and more than 10 shots to bring down your target, you should probably get a new hobby.
I love how gunnies conveniently ignore that 1) there is NO legislation, PROPOSED legislation or even a SINGLE legislator who is interested in taking guns away or overturning the second amendment. We just want assault weapons and clips with double-digit rounds restricted. Stop lying. And 2) background checks kept ONE MILLION FELONS from acquiring legal weapons last year. So are you saying you’re OK with ONE MILLION FELONS having access to guns?
Naturally, you won’t have a single reasoned/factual response to this, so I’ll hang up and listen.
No, more background checks are fine, but they won’t work. To easy to buy a stolen gun, or steal a gun. Look at Siloam Springs last week. 35 guns stolen from a pawn shop, there is a good chance that a lot of those go to criminals. But I’ll go threw a background check every time to buy a gun, I’ve got nothing to hide.
So since you allege it’s “to (sic) easy” to buy a stolen gun or steal one, we shouldn’t enact any rules to make it difficult to legally purchase a gun?
Do you understand how little sense that makes?
“People are going to speed, so might as well not have speed limits.” I wish I could go throw a school zone at 90 mph! According to your logic, that’s OK. Those kids need to learn to look out for themselves!
More extensions of your “can’t stop it” school of thought:
“People are going to rape, it’s a biological urge. No sense making it against the law! Can’t fight nature! Besides, if it’s a legitimate rape…”
“People throw trash and cigarette butts and more on the ground and out their windows anyway. It’s a waste of taxpayer money to try and defend against that. Just let it go. Nature will take care of it anyway.”
he was armed before, but now half as much.
Ok, you evidently did not get that I am pro background checks. I am just saying they won’t have the desired effect. Have fun and be safe when your shooting!!
Well I heard from Marlene’s dog, who heard from Alice, that this guy is an extreme liberal that did this on purpose. He’s trying to undermine the conceal carry legislation in the state congress. The evidence is all there: self-inflicted, non-lifethreatining wound, on university property. Furthermore, nothing screams wacko liberal like public broadcasting. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a card carrying member of Greenpeace…. Those dope smoking, love making, liberal hippies can never be trusted.
This whole thing smells surprisingly familiar to the Helsinki incident back in 1732, of course, everyone knows what happened after that.
This incident just solidifies the the fact that America needs more guns, less regulation, and a nationwide law that requires universities to have open air weapons markets similar to the one in Mogadishu. It’s the only way to keep our children and nation safe, just look at Somalia.
I am the walrus….
and happiness is a warm gun….
I am the walrus.
I see what you did there.
I’m with you 100% on this one. Time to stop those wacko libs once and for all!!! ;)
I have 16 guns of all types. I have never shot my hand or any other body part ( of my own) just a guy breaking into my house. I shot the gun out of his hand and made a hole in his liver. He felt really bad about his actions. When I carry I do not have a round in the chamber. Makes it impossible to shoot your self
I bet you dream about that hole, don’t you?
When I carry I don’t keep one in the chamber either.
I’ve never shot myself either, cause when I carry, I don’t even pack any bullets. One time though, I was showing off my piece in the breakroom and I accidentally pistol-whipped a co-worker.
“I once shot a man in the liver just to watch him get septic.” — Johnny Cash
From the New York Times– “But there is a more fundamental problem with the idea that guns actually protect the hearth and home. Guns rarely get used that way. In the 1990s, a team headed by Arthur Kellermann of Emory University looked at all injuries involving guns kept in the home in Memphis, Seattle and Galveston, Tex. They found that these weapons were fired far more often in accidents, criminal assaults, homicides or suicide attempts than in self-defense. For every instance in which a gun in the home was shot in self-defense, there were seven criminal assaults or homicides, four accidental shootings, and 11 attempted or successful suicides.”
The guy was just washing up and *thought* he was grabbing his gub.
Do you know what the NRA call’s a bullet wound? ” A victory hole “. You heard it here first.
