Residents in Northwest Arkansas awoke Friday morning to find snow on the ground for the first time ever recorded in May, according to the National Weather Service.

Any lingering precipitation after mid-morning should transition to drizzle or light rain, the service reports.

More snowfall is possible Friday night and early Saturday morning, but any accumulation will likely only occur on open, grassy areas.

Cold weather and rain led to the cancelation of the outdoor First Thursday events in Fayetteville. Bentonville’s First Friday has also been cancelled.

Update: Springfest, which was set for Saturday on Dickson Street, has been postponed.
