Fayetteville police are investigating a fiery weekend accident that sent a man to the hospital with second degree burns.

Photos and video surfaced on social media sites at around 9 p.m. Saturday which showed a burning truck headed north on College Avenue. According to witnesses, the driver of the truck jumped from the vehicle while it was still moving. The truck crossed the southbound traffic lanes and crashed into a curb and utility box in front of Lewis Automotive Group at 3373 N. College Ave. across from Village Inn restaurant.

A video uploaded to YouTube by Michael Sharp shows Fayetteville fire crews working to extinguish the flames from the truck after it had crashed.

KNWA reports that the man might have been on fire before he even got into his truck and began driving from a nearby Motel 6.

“We believe that, for some reason at that motel, that he could have possibly had fire on him, and then for some reason, traveled down the roadway and exited his vehicle,” Fayetteville Sgt. Shannon Gabbard told KNWA.

The 40-year-old driver was sent to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital burn unit in Little Rock.

No charges have been filed.
