Two women who reported being sexually assaulted along Wedington Drive were lying about the incident, police said today.

According to a 911 report, the women said they were walking near the Catfish Hole restaurant at 4127 W. Wedington Drive at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they were knocked unconscious from behind and later raped in a nearby wooded area.

The women told police they never saw their attacker and could not provide a description.

During an investigation into the incident, police said they found several inconsistencies in the women’s accounts of the alleged attack. When confronted with the inconsistencies, both women recanted their statements and admitted they were not attacked or raped.

“The Fayetteville Police Department takes these types of reports very seriously and will strive to provide our citizens with a safe and healthy community in which to live and work,” stated a press release issued Thursday afternoon.
