Fayetteville police arrested a former Razorback football player Wednesday in connection with the death of a local man.

Joshua Melton, 33, of Fayetteville, was arrested on one count second degree murder after finding Michael Gover, 30, of West Fork, dead yesterday. Melton played for the Razorbacks from 1999-2002.

According to police reports, the two men got into a physical altercation after a night of drinking. Police said Melton punched Gover multiple times, causing him to collapse onto the floor. Melton went to bed and awoke to find Gover unresponsive.

According to reports, Melton then called police to report the incident.

“Melton was very remorseful of the incident, was very visibly shaken and he was physically crying,” police spokesperson Sgt. Craig Stout told a reporter from KNWA. “I don’t believe Melton had any intent to kill him, neither do our investigators, however, that was the result of the actions that took place.”

KFSM is reporting that Melton was released from the Washington County Detention Center on bond Thursday afternoon. His first court appearance is set for Sept. 30.
