After giving it a go for just over a year, Union Kitchen + Drinks has closed inside the Chancellor Hotel in Fayetteville.

According to Chancellor general manager Jay Johnson, the hotel recently bought the interest in the restaurant from Bowman Hospitality Group, and has been operating it since Oct. 14.

Johnson said the restaurant is called The Chancellor Bar and Grill for now, but plans are in the works for a new name and a new menu.

“We just wanted to get through this last football weekend, and we’ll start working on the restaurant,” he said.

Johnson said that he and his staff are in the early stages of developing the restaurant concept, but he is leaning toward something rooted in Southern cooking.

“We’ve added the shrimp and grits back to the menu, plus Southern fried chicken and pork sliders,” he said. “We’re rolling out new menu items slowly, and we’ll continue to tweak them.”

If all goes well, Johnson said he hopes to have the new restaurant name and concept ready to unveil in early 2014.
