Businesses create ‘Downtown Countdown’ to boost sales after snow storm

Nearly 40 downtown businesses have joined together to remind folks about the importance of shopping locally this holiday season.

In fact, they’ve even offered an incentive to encourage local shoppers to do just that.

A new promotion called “Downtown Countdown” began earlier this week, with businesses on the Fayetteville square, Block Avenue, Dickson Street, and other downtown areas offering a 9.75 percent discount (equal to the sales tax rate in Fayetteville) at their shops when customers show a receipt from any of the other retailers participating in the program.

The idea, organizers say, is to keep the holiday shopping dollars local residents spend this time of year in the local economy, and to help make up for several days of slow sales that resulted from last week’s snow storm during a critical time for many businesses around the holidays.

The promotion will be good all the way through Christmas.
