Work has begun on a project that will widen Razorback Road to four lanes from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to just north of Nettleship Drive.

Crews will install a new storm drainage system, construct curb, gutter and sidewalks and lay a new asphalt surface along the .35-mile section of road. Also, a traffic signal and an additional turn lane will be added at the intersection of Razorback Road and Leroy Pond Drive.

The $2.23 million contract was awarded in February to Sweetser Construction, Inc. of Fayetteville, according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. Work on the project is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

Future phases of the project include continued widening of Razorback Road north to Maple Street and then east up the hill to Garland Avenue.
