Fayetteville police apologize for Thursday night alert messages

Fayetteville Police apologized today after a mistake that sent automatic phone calls to area residents from the recently launched Fayetteville Alert System.

A recorded message, which asked residents to be on the lookout for a missing child near Huntsville Road, was sent to many people around town Thursday night, including some who hadn’t even signed up for the new emergency alert system.

Police said an entry error led to calls being sent out using the local 911 database instead of the new alert system database. According to police, a tweak to the system should ensure it won’t happen again.

Police said the missing child was located.
