Fayetteville nominated in USA TODAY best college town getaway contest

Fayetteville continues to make headlines as one of the top college towns in the nation.

USA TODAY just released its nominees for the Best College Town Weekend travel award contest, and of course, Fayetteville made the list.

“Cities with a college or university have a fun, youthful vibe and unexpected shopping options,” said the editors. “Restaurants, bars and entertainment are typically plentiful and affordable. Throw in a beautiful campus, a culturallly diverse population, some regional surprises and voila’ – you have a great recipe for a weekend.”

Fayetteville has some stiff competition, including other great college towns like Asheville (N.C.), Boulder (Colo.) and Eugene (Ore.)

“Located in the stunning Ozark Mountains of Northwestern Arkansas, Fayetteville is home to the state’s flagship educational institution, the University of Arkansas,” the editors stated. “Besides serving as a gateway to the outdoor adventures of the Ozarks, the town is steeped in history: the Trail of Tears and Butterfield Overland Trail both passed through, and several historic buildings used by Civil War troops still stand.”

The contest gives readers four weeks to vote for their favorite city. Each person can vote once a day through 11:59 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6. The winners will be announced on Oct. 8.
