UPDATE: Body found in burning car early Monday in Fayetteville

UPDATE: Statements and photos posted to On the Mark’s Facebook page suggest the victim may have been an employee of the sports bar. Fayetteville police later identified the victim as 33-year-old Donovan Ward Clifton. The Arkansas State Crime Lab determined Clifton died of acute smoke and soot inhalation. The fire marshal ruled the cause of the fire to be “undetermined.”

Police are investigating the death of a person found in a burning car earlier today in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville police and fire crews responded to a report of a car on fire in the parking lot outside On the Mark Sports Bar & Grill at 2588 N. Gregg Ave. shortly after 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3.

After extinguishing the fire, first responders found a deceased person in the driver’s seat of the car, according to a news release.

Fayetteville Police Chief Greg Tabor said the victim’s body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy seeking positive identification and cause of death. The Fayetteville Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

No other information was released. The investigation is continuing.
