A driver was killed in a collision Thursday night in Springdale after fleeing from Fayetteville police, according to a news release issued Friday morning.

The incident began at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when police attempted to stop a 2003 Dodge 1500 pickup truck for speeding near the intersection of East Joyce Boulevard and North College Avenue.

When the officer turned on his emergency lights, the truck slowly drifted into the next lane, nearly striking another vehicle, according to the release. The truck then turned into the parking lot of a business before striking a curb and then accelerating rapidly northbound on North College.

“Based on his observations, the time of day, and the day of the week, the officer suspected the driver was intoxicated and initiated a vehicle pursuit,” the release stated.

The pursuit continued northbound into Springdale, where the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a large box truck parked in the parking lot of Journey’s Inn at 3535 S. Thompson Ave.

The vehicle suffered “catastrophic damage” and the driver died at the scene, according to the release.

There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The Springdale Police Department is investigating the collision and the identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
