Volunteers with the city’s Urban Forestry Advisory Board this week announced the winners of the group’s inaugural Sustainable Landscape Awards.

Three awards were given, one for restaurant property, one for residential property, and one for commercial/civic property.

Thep Thai Restaurant, located at 1525 S. School Ave., won the restaurant category.

The west Fayetteville home of Calvin Bey, located at 8779 W. Forest Hills Drive, won the residential category.

Tri Cycle Farms, located at 1705 N. Garland Ave., won the commercial/civic category.

The theme for year’s competition was food production. A team of judges used a rubric system to observe applicant’s gardens, according to a news release.

Extra points were given to gardens focused on food production, management, and cultivation. Other areas of scoring included sustainable use of water, use of native species, responsible pest/invasive species control, composting on site, biodiversity, design, maintenance, function, and overall health.

Public tours of each property are scheduled for Saturday, July 16. The Thep Thai tour begins at 9 a.m.; the Bey tour starts at 10 a.m.; and the Tri Cycle Farms tour is scheduled for 11 a.m.
