Emmy Edition 2010
A few months back, I predicted the Oscar winners here on the Flyer. I did surprisingly well. I think I did like 22 for 24 or something like that. My winning rate for the Emmys, however, has never been that high. There...
The Hamptons of the Ozarks
I love watching Barefoot Contessa on the Food Network. For those of you who might not be familiar with the show, it follows the Contessa (aka. caterer Ina Garten) around her Hamptons home and barn. Essentially, it is food porn and real estate porn, all rolled into one. People from New York City proper...
The Magazine Aisle
A simple run to Barnes & Noble is never that simple for me. It all starts out innocently enough. I look over the new release table, wander by the tennis and entertainment books, and spend a great deal of time looking at all of the cookbooks. However, the bulk of my time at Barnes & Noble...
Hot for Summer
So this past weekend, I celebrated my birthday surrounded by friends, friends of friends, and cream puffs (thank you Little Bread’s goddess Hannah). I was enjoying the entire weekend until I actually stopped to breathe for a second and realized something. Damn, it’s hot. Whatever happened...
Five to wait for (I hope)
I have grown to appreciate summer. I haven’t always been a fan. I find that I appreciate my nights being dark and my mornings being light. As a child, growing up on a farm, summer simply ment more daylight to do chores. However, last year when we purchased our house (and deck), I got a newfound...
Is High Society Dead?
So I woke up Wednesday morning from a late night (why did you have to start that set so damn late) Ryan Bingham concert at George’s. I thought about sleeping for a bit longer, but I decided to crack open my new May issues of CitiScapes and Celebrate....
A Branson weekend
This past weekend, Daniel and I traveled up to Branson with my parents. Twice a year we make this pilgrimage. It started a few years ago with the opening of the Hilton Convention Center. See, prior to this, there wasn’t a huge selection of upscale places to stay. Sure there were a few, but most...
Hidden Gems
We are very lucky to have so many great stores, restaurants, and other locations in Fayetteville. I think we would be hard pressed to find a finer restaurant in Arkansas than Theo’s or Bordinos. I think Smoke & Barrel is one of the best bars around, and tops most in Little Rock. I think that...
Who would your ideal local news team consist of?
So I would never call my wakeup routine “culture,” but I thought that the whole “waking up” process was worth looking at. I mean, I don’t know what most people’s routine is. For my partner Daniel, it involves sleeping through twelve alarm clock notices and being a bit...
Spring Awakening
I’m not the biggest fan of spring. It has never been my favorite season. I have always preferred the fall and winter. From a media standpoint, fall brings us new television and winter brings us film awards season. Now that the Oscar season is over, we tend to go on an early summer vacation. Writers...
Monday To-do: March 8
If you missed the Oscars last night and are considering Googling around for a list of the big winners, look no further than our own Wayne Bell’s prediction post from last week. That’s right, Wayne nailed...
2010 Oscar Predictions – Pt. 1
Oh, it’s the scary time of the year when my reputation (and normally a ten dollar Starbucks card) get put on the line. I have yet to lose the Oscar pool at our Academy Awards party and I don’t intend to this year either. That being said, this whole Olympic thing has really put a wrench in it, by...
Olympic Fever
So this is the part of the year where we should all be enjoying award show after award show and the big episodes that come around during February sweeps. Typically, those episodes include weddings, deaths, or major plot events. Networks try their damnest to get viewership during the crucial sweeps months...
Blinded by the Oscar nominations
Blogs all around were wondering how the inclusion of ten nominees for best picture (instead of five) would affect the Oscar nominations. I can say with guaranteed certainty, not much. The fact is, only those films with a director nominated stand any chance at actually winning best picture. Furthermore,...
Top Ten Emmys of the 2000s
Over the past few weeks I have written a few articles looking over the past decade in media. First I started with film, then music, and finally theatre. This week, I have decided to end the series with a look at the best television offerings of the 2000s. When evaluating the medium, I turned to the...
Top Ten Tonys of the 2000s
In my quest to look back over the past 10 years in film, theatre, music, and television, I have decided to tackle theatre this week. Now this might be the least interesting list, because we have very limited opportunities to actually see some of the fine productions that have played the Broadway stage...
Top Ten Grammys of the 2000s
In my quest to look over the past decades “best,” my journey has taken me to music. Now I would never claim to be an expert on music. In fact, I am currently listening to the new CD by Mary J. Blige and I have no idea what the critics have or haven’t said about it. What I do know is that no...
Top Ten Oscars of the 2000s
This is the time of the year when lots of people (most of them smarter than I) put out their best of the year lists. I always find this prospect daunting. It’s easy for me to say which is the best movie among five or ten Oscar nominees or which show was the best out of the Emmy nominees, but from...
Film Review – Up in the Air
Once in a while, a film comes along that actually lives up to the hype that surrounds it. It happened earlier this year with “Precious,” so I was skeptical when another film rolled along with weighty expectations and impressive reviews. “Up...
Film Review – Nine
Remember watching some of those modern “Robert Altman” movies where you felt like you were in on the joke? No, I’m not talking about the superb “Gosford Park” or even “The Player.” I’m referencing fare like “Cookie’s Fortune” and “A...
Film Review – Avatar
Well by the time this review hits your screen, chances are you will have already read a ton of reviews regarding “Avatar.” This was a movie that many have waited years for. This is also a movie that many wanted to be brilliant...
Oscar derby…Where we stand?
So for those of you who are looking to find some movies to go watch this holiday season, the Oscar derby has just made your laundry list a lot more difficult. After over fifty years, the Academy Awards have decided to increase their best picture line-up from five to ten nominees in an attempt to increase...
To-do: Tuesday 12/15
Saying that tonight’s entertainment options are slim would be the understatement of the year. And considering the fact that there are only a couple of weeks left in the year, that’s pretty monumental. But still, this is a post we’ve published every Monday through Thursday since...
And the Grammy goes to WHAT?
I feel like I spend a great amount of time writing about film in this column, and with award season starting, it really takes precedent over the other arts for a few weeks. In fact, the somewhat unqualified and boring National Board of Review kicked off the awards season last week when it named “Up...
Film Review – Precious
Okay…so by now, you must be tired of hearing me complain about how we don’t seem to qualify for decent movies in Northwest Arkansas. We have to wait, wait, and then wait some more for some of the “Oscar” fair that the rest of the country gets to enjoy early. This past weekend, while...
Film Review – An Education
I was complaining a few weeks back that we have to wait so long for high quality-”Oscar” type movies. The current state of Fayetteville theaters are not proving me wrong.
The rest of the country got “ My favorite day of the year is coming up. No…not my birthday. No…not Halloween. No…not even Christmas time. No, my favorite day of the year is Black Friday.
Now I realize that the mere mention of the words Black Friday is enough to send shivers down many spines. I am well aware that there... It’s the time of year when we are supposed to look over our lives and realize and appreciate those things that we are thankful for. From a culture standpoint, I suppose I should say that I am happy that Danish Modern is back. I’m pretty happy that designers are showing chunky rain/fishing boots... So this past weekend, my partner and I had to trek on down to Texarkana for a wedding. It’s interesting…every time we leave town, we always wonder why? I mean, it doesn’t matter if we are going to a large city (which we do love) or a small town, we are always ready to return to our beloved Fayetteville.
So... The Fayetteville Flyer is a publication of Wonderstate Media, LLC, which is locally owned and operated by Todd Gill and Dustin Bartholomew. The Fayetteville Flyer’s content is created by Todd, Dustin, and a handful of talented contributors.
