Baltimore band Yukon plays ROTC / the Grill on Monday.

There’s a relatively new venue in town in a place known more for delicious food than live music. Restaurant on the Corner / the Grill is one of the newest places to see live, original music and Monday night, August 11th you can catch a national band and three good locals for a recommended $5 donation. Yukon, Fire Don’t Care, The Kicker Knot, and Sister Brother will all be playing Monday night.

Baltimore band Yukon will headline the show, and is described as progressive rock as well as math rock, and often compared to Genesis, Drive Like Jehu, and Don Caballero.

Fire Don’t Care is a two piece rock outfit from Fayetteville. Just guitar, drums and vocals, these dudes will rock your nuts off.

The Kicker Knot is primarily Fayettevillian Brian Wolfe, formerly of psyche-folk band Wooly Mammoth, with a revolving set of players including his brother and fellow WM collaborator Paul Wolfe. This show will be the release party of his new album “Ghost Mouth of the Clouds”.

Finally, Sister/Brother is a loud synth and drums girl duo from Fayetteville, featuring members of pop group Tippy Canoe and the creative organizer of the New Deli venue.

The music will start at 7:00 on the patio. If you’ve never checked out the patio at ROTC, then you’re in for a treat. It’s pretty awesome out there. We’re just excited that there is a new place off Dickson St. that is having shows. Check it out.

Local pimps who know how hard it is out here will gather en masse at the Fayetteville Town Center come <strike>September 19th</strike> October 24th and collectively sip the hell out of some sizzurp with the Three 6 Mafia.

Do hwa? Did I just write the words “Three 6 Mafia” and “Fayetteville Town Center” in the same sentence?

Um. Well. Let’s see here. Actually, I have no idea what to write next.

Here, I’ll just brainstorm for a minute: Triple Six (666). Tim’s Pizza on the square. Town Center has a stage? Old Post Office. Memphis. Koopsta. Crunchy Black. Academy Award. Hustle & Flow. Smoked Out, Loced Out. Stogie’s.

Uh. Yeah, that’s not helping at all. Howzabout I just let you guys do the talkin’.

Do you wanna dieeeeeee? If so, at least wait until Oct 8th.

Who’s a Toadies fan? You’s a Toadies fan? We’s a Toadies fan? Rejoice!

Unlike the folks over at Tuned In, we had not heard any buzz about The Toadies coming to Fayetteville. Nevertheless, it appears as though they’ll be rocking Rubberneck-style at George’s on Wednesday October 8. At least that’s what JamBase is saying. The show is currently not listed on The Toadies’ official website, but that’s probably because the listings don’t seem to extend into October yet.

In case any of ya’ll missed the 1990s, The Toadies had a particular song on the radio about 2 or 3 times an hour throughout most of the decade. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could remind you which song it is with just a couple of lines: “Do you wanna dieeeeee?” or better yet “So help me Jeeeeeesus.” Still confused? Fine. There’s a video below.

Personally, I missed out on any of the band’s other tunes…probably because it was seven years before their next album was released. It looks like the remaining members are back at it and plan to release a third album in August. Cool.

Despite having her latest release added to Pitchforkmedia’s list of 20 Worst Album Covers of 2007, an unfazed Ani DiFranco is charging ahead as usual. And fortunately for Northwest Arkansas fans, she’s stopping by <strike>the AMP</strike> George’s Majestic Lounge on September 16.

All insignificant album cover lists aside, DiFranco’s latest “DiFrancology” Canon, features a whopping 36 songs from her back catalog and offers what her website deems “an unprecedented look at how the artist sees her prolific career.”

For fans who were expecting more than just a “greatest hits” type of album from DiFranco last year, it should be noted that it’s a wonder she was even able to sit down and compile anything considering she had just given birth to daughter Petah Lucia in January. From what I hear, babies are sort of time consuming. Apparently you have to feed them and help them use the bathroom for a while or something like that.

Who’s pumped?

This past weekend was one of the busiest of the summer for the Arkansas Music Pavilion with three back-to-back shows.

Jason Isbell, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Stoney LaRue played Thursday night.

The rock continued on Friday, when quirky rockers Ween took the stage.

Saturday night, however, the Pat Benetar show had to be called off due to the nature of the electrical storms that kicked Fayetteville’s ass for hours on end. It was the first time the AMP had to cancel a show. Bummer.

These three shows could not be more different. And that’s a good thing if you ask us. We can tell the folks who put these shows on are trying to bring some great, diverse artists to town. Good job, AMP peeps.

So, did you make it out to any of these shows? Did you get your face rocked off? Did you dance? Did you sing? Did you see Jesus? Let us know!

Who will win the Ultimate Battle of the Band Names?

There is a heated battle going on, folks. A battle of the band names to be exact. And it’s high time you get in the know.

In the right corner, from Fayetteville, we have 80’s-influenced pop rockers Molten Lava! And in the left corner, from Searcy, we have vintage rockers Molten Lava!

In what can only be described as an intense, high-speed, MySpace blog, <strike>stone</strike>-word-tossing battle royale of the early summer, two Arkansas bands are having it out. As tough as each is sounding via their MySpace blogs, though, it appears as if the original, 1998-formed Molten Lava from Searcy has recently upped the anti and possibly sealed its victory.

It all started with a seemingly harmless name-change request but after the 2006-formed upstarters declared themselves “the band people actually go to see”, it quickly became an all-out cage match.

The original Molten Lava fired back by officially referring to their rivals as “Bogus Molten Lava” which prompted “Bogus Molten Lava” to call for a boycott of the original Molten Lava’s October show dates and their album which they referred to as “How to Take my Band Way Too Undeservingly Seriously.”

In a lightening-fast turn of events, however, the gloves were officially removed with the late-June trademark filing for the name “Molten Lava” by the more-experienced Searcy rockers. As a direct result of what seems to have been the final blow, the newcomers from Fayetteville have issued a press release entitled “Arkansas Band Changing Name after Trademark Dispute” and have already decided upon “Boom Kinetic” as their new musical moniker.

“Are we taking ourselves too seriously?” asked the original Molten Lava. “Absolutely. But don’t blame us - blame our robot drummer.”

Bikes, Blues & BBQ announced today that the headliner of this year’s festival will be The Allman Brothers Band, and bikers and old dudes around Northwest Arkansas and all over the United States are high-fiving each other, and bumping their beer guts together, and putting on their leather pants and doing weird biker dances all over the place.

We guess. Or whatever bikers do to celebrate.

And whether it makes us cool or not, we are secretly kinda pumped about it too. Ramblin’ man? Midnight Rider? Jessica? Yes, please.

The concert will be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday, September 26. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Concert begins at 8:00 pm. A bonus is that a portion of the proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit local charities in Northwest Arkansas.

Tickets go on sale, Friday, July 11 at 10 am. To find out more about ticket availability, and to see the lineup of other acts scheduled on the free admission main stage, go to www.bikesbluesandbbq.org.

We’re glad the Allman Brothers are still doing it. And if you’re gonna have a festival with a couple hundred thousand bikers, who are for the most part older dudes with really weird fashion sense, we can’t think of a better band for them to shake their, err assless chaps to.

It doesn’t appear that the Allman Brothers Band has an opener, or at least not at this time. There are of course tons of local and regional blues bands already posted over at the BBB site but they will be on the mainstage at the Walton Arts Center.

Anyone know if Foghat is available?

Mad props to double K for finding this on the Allman Bro’s website last week.

Fayetteville Flyer's Farrah lays down some rules for a good cover song.

I love music, I really do, and I rarely get a chance to discuss it with my friends. They don’t listen to me because apparently I am the only human alive who doesn’t love this genius. Sorry friends — thanks for still letting me come to your houses…I digress.

I was thinking about music and music covers after reading The Squidge’s article. What makes a good cover versus a bad cover? Does the song need to be “good” to start with? Can you really improve upon a classic? What if you love the song but hate the artist? I enjoy a good cover and can go into convulsive fits over bad ones.

In my opinion you need a few things to make a truly great cover.

1) Start with some pretty sweet source material.
2) Make it your own. Truly own your version of the song.
3) Don’t wimp out with a remix and call it a cover.

A list of sweet covers that follows the rules:

Turn the Page - Metallica This is big for me because I don’t like those angry Napster-hating dudes and I love Bob Seger. Metallica took a song that was pretty much woe is me and turned it into an angry anthem about life on the road. And the video was crazy ridiculous.
Goldigger - Kanye West and Jaime Foxx Do you still find this song catchy as hell? Do you love Ray Charles anyway? Yes and yes. Hell, even the edited version is sweet. A rare feat in hip-hop.
All is Full of Love - Death Cab for Cutie Mopey poppy rockers decide to take on ultra weirdo and ultra badass Bjork? Wow. This is so odd it works.
Just Like Heaven - Dinosaur Jr. I love the Cure and hate this song. However when J.Mascis and company cover this song I suddenly think it’s top notch. Maybe it’s his scratchy voice. Maybe it’s the decidely Un-Cureness of Jr’s version. I don’t know but I like it.
Stairway to Heaven - Dolly Parton This is one of the songs that shouldn’t be covered. It’s a joke. It’s too long. We all like it, but god how many times have we heard it? And Dolly Parton? Really? Really. This is the sweeping finale on Parton’s perfect bluegrass album Halos and Horns. She even got Plant and Page approval.

What makes a bad cover?
1) Not following rules 1 - 3.
2) Unnecessary or gratuitous (read you need a hit or are promoting something)

Now for the bad. The truly bad.

It’s My Life - No Doubt Why was this song covered? Was this for a movie for Gwen’s career? The Talk Talk version is really good. This is so far removed from No Doubt and Ms.Stefani that I cannot understand why it was done. Maybe they are big Talk Talk fans.
I love Rock ‘n Roll - Britney Spears Why is this awful? Besides the obvious, there is also this. No further explanantion required.
Take My Breath Away/These Boots Are Made For Walking - Jessica Simpson A double offender. Breath is cheesy at best, the worst hit for a good band. And why the Boots for Dukes of Hazard? I don’t care for your breathy singing anyway.
Imagine - A Perfect Circle - An explicit version of a song about peace, brotherhood and hope. Ummmmmm ok. FAIL.
Burning Down the House - Tom Jones and The Cardigans This pains me in many ways. I am a big fan of The Cardigans and I enjoy some Tom Jones. But this is awful. Unnecessary, silly and just plain bad. What a weird match while we’re at it. How did these two get together?
911 Is a Joke - Duran Duran No comment needed here.

And honorable mention goes to:
ANY SONG DONE IN EUROTRASH STYLE WITH SYNTH BEATS I work at the mall and walk by Abercrombie & Fitch several times a day. Pick a song, any song. It has been covered and synthed up to a pulsing beat and played ad nauseam and so loudly you can hear it at the Cookie Company.

Flyers, care to add to best or worst?

"This is for the biggest bands and the biggest stuff - Jimmy Buffett, the Rolling Stones," Smith said.

According to the Morning News, some guy from Fort Smith wants to build a gigantic, 16,000-seat amphitheater in rural Benton County about 7 miles from the NWA Regional Airport. And thanks to a quick approval by planning board members yesterday, it looks like he’s one step closer to his dream.

Gregory Smith of Fort Smith, who currently operates a farming business on the proposed property has a vision for a “rustic setting” amphitheater not unlike Denver’s Red Rocks or LA’s Hollywood Bowl. If built, the Osage Creek Performing Arts Pavilion will have 7,500 fixed seats and a grassy area for more than 8,000 people.

“This is for the biggest bands and the biggest stuff - Jimmy Buffett, the Rolling Stones,” Smith said. “It’s going to be wonderful.”

Here’s hoping this $12-$14 million “rustic setting” amphitheater doesn’t end up being a portable tent in the parking lot of the Pinnacle Hills Promenade.

Bright Eyes and Rilo Kiley hotties are headed our way in September. Let the drooling commence.

Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) is going to have a busy-ass fall this year. Not only is he releasing a self-titled album on Merge Records but he’s also planning a world tour that will take him through South America, Canada, the U.S., Europe, back to the U.S. and then to Australia.

Why should you give a damn? Because he’s stopping at George’s Majestic Lounge on September 23. And he’s bringing Rilo Kiley frontgal Jenny Lewis with him.

In what seems to be an effort to bring the two single most attractive young talents in indie rock together on one stage, select dates of this tour are sure to pack the house and leave thousands of hipsters drooling for weeks. If I had dollar for every time I’ve heard the phrase, “Conor Oberst is soooo hot” I’d have…well…a bunch of dollars. And hell, Jenny Lewis has been breaking hearts since 1989’s The Wizard.

This is sure to be the show of the summer for those of you who don’t fancy yourselves as patrons of the AMP. Fortunately there’s a Tulsa date a couple of days later so you might even be able to get into George’s that night on what would otherwise be a sold-out show full of out-of-towners.

Check out a couple of really, really good Conor Oberst tracks from his forthcoming album at conoroberst.com.

UPDATE: Looks like Tuned In <strike>has received word that tickets could go on sale as early as this Friday, June 20.</strike>has complete ticket information: “Tickets to the Sept. 23 show at George’s are $25 and go on sale at 9 a.m. June 20 (Friday) through George’s Web site.”

I did you guys a terrible disservice by not reminding ya'll about this show. Sorry. Sort of.

I did you a gigantic disservice yesterday, fellow F-towners.

I forgot to remind you that The Whigs were playing at George’s last night and for that I am truly sorry. The reason, however, is because somehow I completely forgot about it myself. That is, until 9:30pm when I promptly put my pants back on and left the house to hurry down to Dickson St.

I had just come back from an all-ages show out at ROTC (which was awesome) and was ready to settle down into a video game or two (or 20) when I noticed the folks over at TDKK had posted a reminder about the show. Thanks, guys. The show was absolutely badical-ass-tastic.

Did any of ya’ll make it? If so, can someone please explain to me how in the hell The Whigs can make that full of a sound just being a 3-piece? Cause it was unbelievable.

Sorry again. Sort of. Happy Friday the 13th, by the way.
