Jazz club ‘The Nines’ coming to the Fayetteville square?

March 1, 2010 · By Dustin · 10 Comments

EJ Ball Building

There’s been a lot of action around the square recently. In the last year, a pizza place, a cupcake cafe, a Mexican restaurant, and a Feel Good Lounge (RIP) have opened their doors downtown.

Word on the street is that Greg Hodges, also known as DJ Greg from Speakeasy is planning to open a bar inside the EJ Ball Building, just across the lobby from Bliss Cupcake Cafe.

Hodges says the new bar will be called The Nines, and will focus on live jazz in a 1940’s style atmosphere.

The space, located on the ground floor of the west side of the building, features an all-glass exterior, and a small patio with a good view of Dickson St. and Old Main.

We’ll keep you posted. Can Fayetteville support a live jazz establishment downtown?

February 24, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 1 Comment

(Note: Well this is embarrassing. Somehow, this winner announcement post got stuck in the queue and never was published. Sorry, folks. You can, however, always assume you didn’t win if you aren’t contacted within a few hours after a giveaway ends.)

The two, randomly drawn winners are:

Forum Report: Tuesday 2/2

February 2, 2010 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

The Flyer Forum saw a little action this morning from a couple of folks.

  1. Milky asks, “Can anyone suggest a reputable mechanic?” It looks as though the steering on Milky’s Nissan van could use some help. So can anyone suggest a good mechanic?
  2. Hermit Thrushes is in need of a last-minute venue this Thursday. Apparently their scheduled show is no longer scheduled but they’d still like to play. “If you can help us out get in touch,” says Sam.

That’s all for now.

Winter weather photos coming in

January 29, 2010 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

The ice has turned to snow in Fayetteville and the photos coming in on the Flyer Wire are starting to look more fun than scary.

With our local weather stations predicting upwards of 10 inches of snow, anybody who’s been anxious to get out a sled might be in for a real treat tomorrow.

In the meantime, there are a few dozen photos that have already been tagged on Flickr with the #nwaicestorm10 tag. Feel free to tag your snow photos if you’d like to contribute to the community. Any photos with the #nwaicestorm10 tag will show up on the Flyer Wire and will also be automatically added to the slideshow here on this post. Of course, you can always view the entire set at Flickr.com.

Flyer Wire now collecting real-time ice storm information

January 27, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 11 Comments

If this year’s ice storm is anything like the one we experienced last year, it could be difficult to find information for a few days. Hopefully, a new feature we’ve just launched can provide a little help.

The Flyer Wire is a community-powered microsite that’s designed to track real-time information on Twitter and photos on Flickr related to a specific topic.

The current topic, of course, is the ice storm that will most likely hit our area sometime in the next day or two and the Flyer Wire will be pulling in tweets that are marked with the “#nwaicestorm10″ hashtag and Flickr photos that are tagged with “#nwaicestorm10.”

The Flyer Forum is seeing some action

January 5, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 2 Comments

Our forum usually doesn’t see too much action. That’s because each story published here is like a forum topic in itself, especially when they receive comments.

But there have been a few posts appear recently and here’s a brief recap:

I Hate Cancer Benefit Concert – ShelSpin writes to tell us about a two-night event on Jan. 8 and 9 to raise money for Christine Burnside-Dickerson’s chemo treatments and medical bills. The show will be held at Drifter’s. Read more…

Lost Camera found in fayetteville off dickson – This isn’t a new topic but it seems someone has come forward who lost a camera near Dickson Street. Read more…

Fayetteville Trail Plan Flawed – We knew this one seemed familiar. Turns out it was published in a local newspaper today, too. Read more…

It snowed again!

January 4, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 4 Comments

It’s only been a month since we asked if it would ever snow again in Fayetteville and we’ve already had three snow days, including a white Christmas. Oh, and a frozen fountain.

This morning, we stopped by the University of Arkansas campus just as the sun was peeking over the mountains and it was pretty great. There was just enough snow to make for a few good photos.

Check them out here for head over to Flickr for the full set.

Arkansas-produced short video gets famous

December 30, 2009 · By Dustin · 1 Comment

By now, a lot of you have seen the video that is sweeping the internets lately, Dwight David Honeycutt for Conway School Board.

The five-minute video was filmed in North Little Rock and stars Conway resident Dave Parker as Dwight David Honeycutt, former star of a children’s television show and would-be political candidate.

It has made its way to Funny or Die, and been viewed about 44,000 times on YouTube so far.

OK, so it’s pretty cold out there

December 10, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 4 Comments

“Burr, it’s cold,” doesn’t really do it justice today. Last night, I was poking fun at the fact that everyone was freaking out about the weather but after just two minutes on the downtown square this morning, my fingers were actually starting to hurt.

I was on the square to take a few photos of Hank Kaminksy’s World Peace Prayer Fountain that sits in front of the Town Center building. I saw a tweet last night which said the fountain was frozen over and figured I’d stop by this morning to grab a few pics of my own.

Score prediction winners for Eastern Michigan, USC, and Troy

November 19, 2009 · By Dustin · No Comments

I realized this morning I’ve done a crappy job of announcing the winners for our weekly score prediction contests here on the Flyer. Here are the last three winners in one post. Make friends with these people. They’re BBQ-rich.

Arkansas beat the crap out of Eastern Michigan, and Sardon was the closest to the 63-27 final score with his prediction of 63-14.

Flyer Blogfolio is alive!

November 18, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 5 Comments

Last week, we put out a call for local bloggers to submit their blogs to be listed in a local blog directory.

We hit a few speed bumps along the way but have since recovered and are pleased to announce the Flyer Blogfolio.

Is there any logical way to define a blog?

November 11, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 19 Comments

Oh, the irony.

A couple of days ago, we asked people in our community to submit their blogs to be listed in a local blog directory we’ve been planning to launch here on the Flyer.

After three or four entries, we hit a brick wall. In other words, we came upon a submission that we couldn’t define as being a blog or not. A few entries later, the same thing happened. And then again.

Which led us to an eye-rolling discussion about what defines a blog. It’s a debate we’ve had many times here at the Flyer but this time, we needed a definitive answer in order to move forward with our directory. Each time we thought we’d found an answer, there was a loophole in our logic that put us back to square one.

Calling all local bloggers

November 9, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 5 Comments

If you have a blog and you live in Northwest Arkansas (or used to live here), we’d love to list your site here on the Flyer in a new directory we’re creating.

It doesn’t cost any money or anything like that. We’re simply trying to collect as many local blogs as possible so we can organize them into categories.

It’ll be kinda like the Twitter Guide in that we’ll have blog names, descriptions and of course, a link available.

Twitter Lists: Better late than never

October 30, 2009 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

A couple of weeks ago, Twitter began silently adding a new feature to a very select few users. A feature that, in my opinion, should’ve come long ago. Last week, my personal account received it. Yesterday, almost everyone I know got it and a complete rollout is expected any time now.

It’s an excellent addition to the service even if the idea isn’t all that revolutionary.

Why we’re publishing public meetings

October 28, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 10 Comments

Last month, we began publishing public meetings information here on the Flyer. And by “public meetings” I mean city council meetings, ward meetings, planning commission meetings, etc.

So far, we’ve published 35 days worth of public meeting information but we still haven’t gotten a whole lot of traffic on those posts. They’re certainly not the most exciting things to read, I know. But despite that and the small amount of pageviews they’ve gotten, I’m still convinced there’s value in publishing them.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…a blog?

October 26, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 5 Comments

For a while now, we’ve been trying to figure out an informal way to post brief notes, site ideas, commentary, questions, contest winners, etc.

On plenty of occasions, we’ve found ourselves asking, “What section does this fit into?” Oftentimes, the post idea gets completely scrapped simply because we didn’t feel we had a proper channel for it. Other times, we turned to Twitter or Facebook.
