Jazz club ‘The Nines’ coming to the Fayetteville square?

March 1, 2010 · By Dustin · 10 Comments

EJ Ball Building

There’s been a lot of action around the square recently. In the last year, a pizza place, a cupcake cafe, a Mexican restaurant, and a Feel Good Lounge (RIP) have opened their doors downtown.

Word on the street is that Greg Hodges, also known as DJ Greg from Speakeasy is planning to open a bar inside the EJ Ball Building, just across the lobby from Bliss Cupcake Cafe.

Hodges says the new bar will be called The Nines, and will focus on live jazz in a 1940’s style atmosphere.

The space, located on the ground floor of the west side of the building, features an all-glass exterior, and a small patio with a good view of Dickson St. and Old Main.

We’ll keep you posted. Can Fayetteville support a live jazz establishment downtown?

Forum Report: Tuesday 2/2

February 2, 2010 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

The Flyer Forum saw a little action this morning from a couple of folks.

  1. Milky asks, “Can anyone suggest a reputable mechanic?” It looks as though the steering on Milky’s Nissan van could use some help. So can anyone suggest a good mechanic?
  2. Hermit Thrushes is in need of a last-minute venue this Thursday. Apparently their scheduled show is no longer scheduled but they’d still like to play. “If you can help us out get in touch,” says Sam.

That’s all for now.

Winter weather photos coming in

January 29, 2010 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

The ice has turned to snow in Fayetteville and the photos coming in on the Flyer Wire are starting to look more fun than scary.

With our local weather stations predicting upwards of 10 inches of snow, anybody who’s been anxious to get out a sled might be in for a real treat tomorrow.

In the meantime, there are a few dozen photos that have already been tagged on Flickr with the #nwaicestorm10 tag. Feel free to tag your snow photos if you’d like to contribute to the community. Any photos with the #nwaicestorm10 tag will show up on the Flyer Wire and will also be automatically added to the slideshow here on this post. Of course, you can always view the entire set at Flickr.com.

The Flyer Forum is seeing some action

January 5, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 2 Comments

Our forum usually doesn’t see too much action. That’s because each story published here is like a forum topic in itself, especially when they receive comments.

But there have been a few posts appear recently and here’s a brief recap:

I Hate Cancer Benefit Concert – ShelSpin writes to tell us about a two-night event on Jan. 8 and 9 to raise money for Christine Burnside-Dickerson’s chemo treatments and medical bills. The show will be held at Drifter’s. Read more…

Lost Camera found in fayetteville off dickson – This isn’t a new topic but it seems someone has come forward who lost a camera near Dickson Street. Read more…

Fayetteville Trail Plan Flawed – We knew this one seemed familiar. Turns out it was published in a local newspaper today, too. Read more…

It snowed again!

January 4, 2010 · By Todd Gill · 4 Comments

It’s only been a month since we asked if it would ever snow again in Fayetteville and we’ve already had three snow days, including a white Christmas. Oh, and a frozen fountain.

This morning, we stopped by the University of Arkansas campus just as the sun was peeking over the mountains and it was pretty great. There was just enough snow to make for a few good photos.

Check them out here for head over to Flickr for the full set.

The Flyer Forum is a great place to start and participate in discussions on issues that are close to home. It’s also an easy way to keep up with what other locals are talking about.

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the topics that are getting some attention lately:

  1. Government healthcare option… how much would you pay? – Thanks to afranke for getting this topic started and asking the question “how much would/could you pay per month for that public option?”
  2. Best places to watch sunsets – In this topic, trisarahtops wants to know what your favorite sunset spots are around town.
  3. Electric cars are almost here. Are they the answer? – Here we have a 10-post topic started by Jones who is curious what everyone thinks about electric cars.

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the topics that are getting our attention lately:

4th of July? – “Just wanted to get 4th of July to-do discussion going a bit early,” says LawHog. What do you know of that’s happening on the fourth?

Sue Madison’s stance on NWA alcohol sales – Forum member Jim reminds us of a hot topic in Springdale right now: Macadoodles. Not sure what we’re talking about? Check out this topic for a nice rundown of some of the details.

Little Statue of Liberty – The question afranke asked has already been answered but did you know that the statue had moved?

Oh, and the Single Payer Healthcare topic is up to 25 posts now, by the way.

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the topics that are getting some attention lately:

Single Payer Healthcare – After only 21 hours, there’s already a great discussion forming around universal healthcare and the possible fines we might face in the future if we’re not covered. Thanks to SAM for getting this one started.

Canoeing NWA – Kings River Outfitters and Turner Bend seem to be fully booked lately. Can you help troy find a place to canoe? Got any favorite places nearby?

ATV’s in city limits – Somebody’s four-wheelin’ through Milky’s neighborhood. Got any advice for talking to neighbors without upsetting them?

Besides those, there’s also an open position at Art Amiss, a local dog that needs a home and a handful of other topics to check out.

If you’ve got a question or concern, don’t hesitate to start your own discussion thread. Or if you’ve got a minute and just want to help fellow local out, head over to the Flyer Forum and chime in.
