Arkansas-produced short video gets famous

December 30, 2009 · By Dustin · 1 Comment

By now, a lot of you have seen the video that is sweeping the internets lately, Dwight David Honeycutt for Conway School Board.

The five-minute video was filmed in North Little Rock and stars Conway resident Dave Parker as Dwight David Honeycutt, former star of a children’s television show and would-be political candidate.

It has made its way to Funny or Die, and been viewed about 44,000 times on YouTube so far.

OK, so it’s pretty cold out there

December 10, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 4 Comments

“Burr, it’s cold,” doesn’t really do it justice today. Last night, I was poking fun at the fact that everyone was freaking out about the weather but after just two minutes on the downtown square this morning, my fingers were actually starting to hurt.

I was on the square to take a few photos of Hank Kaminksy’s World Peace Prayer Fountain that sits in front of the Town Center building. I saw a tweet last night which said the fountain was frozen over and figured I’d stop by this morning to grab a few pics of my own.

Is there any logical way to define a blog?

November 11, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 19 Comments

Oh, the irony.

A couple of days ago, we asked people in our community to submit their blogs to be listed in a local blog directory we’ve been planning to launch here on the Flyer.

After three or four entries, we hit a brick wall. In other words, we came upon a submission that we couldn’t define as being a blog or not. A few entries later, the same thing happened. And then again.

Which led us to an eye-rolling discussion about what defines a blog. It’s a debate we’ve had many times here at the Flyer but this time, we needed a definitive answer in order to move forward with our directory. Each time we thought we’d found an answer, there was a loophole in our logic that put us back to square one.

Twitter Lists: Better late than never

October 30, 2009 · By Todd Gill · No Comments

A couple of weeks ago, Twitter began silently adding a new feature to a very select few users. A feature that, in my opinion, should’ve come long ago. Last week, my personal account received it. Yesterday, almost everyone I know got it and a complete rollout is expected any time now.

It’s an excellent addition to the service even if the idea isn’t all that revolutionary.

Mayor Jordan’s first six months

July 1, 2009 · By Dustin · 4 Comments

On January 2nd of this year, Lioneld Jordan was officially sworn in as the mayor of Fayetteville. That means Thursday of this week will mark the end of Mayor Jordan’s first six months on the job.

His first challenge was the ice storm that hit less than 30 days after he took office back in January. We lost a ton of our trees, roadways were blocked all over town, and much of Fayetteville was without power for at least four days, many for as long as several weeks. Mayor Jordan issued a statement, and the city acted quickly to set up shelters, and the massive cleanup process began.

What “darker side” of Dickson Street?

May 11, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 214 Comments

40/29 News’ Tiffany Stewart recently was allowed to follow the Fayetteville Police Department as officers patrolled the Dickson Street area one evening. The report aired this weekend and twice referred to a “darker side” of Dickson while showing footage of a few kids who’d had too much to drink and were being arrested for public intoxication or disorderly conduct.

Are you Twittering or just Tweeting?

March 5, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 10 Comments

The other day, I mentioned on Twitter that I was amazed to see how many people were “Tweeting but not Twittering.” I’ve since received a few inquires as to what I meant by that.

If you’re not familiar with Twitter, none of this is going to make any sense at all. And if you think Twitter is a giant waste of time, well, you should probably get back to work because this whole post is about Twitter.

Which newspaper (if any) should the City advertise with?

January 18, 2009 · By Todd Gill · 8 Comments

Last week at the City Council Agenda Session, the issue of which local newspaper to publish 2009 public notices in almost got skimmed right over. That is, until Ward 3 Alderman Bobby Ferrell spoke up.

“Is this a bid?” he asked, upon realizing that the proposed advertising contract with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette was for a whopping $102,225. The answer was “no.”

Hope for Arkansas: Who’s in?

September 17, 2008 · By Todd Gill · 27 Comments

After the Georgia-based band, The Whigs came through town for the second time this year, I was hooked. So hooked, in fact, that I spent a good portion of the following morning researching the band. After watching a few lackluster home videos on YouTube, I found an interview with them that forced my jaw to the ground.
