I wanted to follow up on my last comment.

Some people are going to say the Copenhagen is nothing like Fayetteville, and they’d be mostly right. Copenhagen is more like Dallas. Copenhagen succumbed to the same stupid highway lust that Dallas continues to suffer from.

But Copenhagen made a change. They committed to real goals for establishing so-called “alternative” transportation. They invested wisely and consistently. Consistently is the keyword here.

It took 30+ years, but now they have the best multi-modal (that means multiple modes of transportation) infrastructure in the world. They literally have bike escalators (Google that, and if you think that’s the shiz, check out StreetFilms).

If a town that looked like Dallas can do it, why can’t we? There’s only one reason.

I’ll give you three guesses…

If I lived downtown I’d feel pretty insulted by the council, not to mention Steve Clark. I guess he thinks “reasonable businessmen” shouldn’t have to answer to the citizens whose property they are using.

Regarding health permits, etc, that language already exists but is worded to apply only to BB&BBQ. Petty’s ordinance would make it apply to all festivals using city property for more than two days.

Really? 6-1 against the festival ordinance???

That just blows my mind. The people of Fayetteville don’t want the festivals. The city wants to have them just to raise money, yet they won’t pass an ordinance that would give them a better idea of how much money they’re making or losing. DUMB.

Also, the article above doesn’t mention the other half of this same ordinance: “During any city permitted festival using city property for more than two days, the organizer/permittee of the festival shall ensure that all outdoor vendors have all necessary health permits and zoning compliance permits prior to issuing its permit to allow the vendor to operate.” Why would anyone vote against this?? Health permits? Nah, we’re good. Keep giving prison tattoos out of the back of a truck.. And if any of the food goes bad or isn’t up to standard, serve it anyway. This is about making money, not ensuring the safety of our citizens.

thanx, sg. that is one of the rare sensible comments I’ve heard from a razorback “fan” all year. you can’t switch coaches every couple of years and expect to ever build a program. ask 2/3 of the teams in the nba.
am I happy with the state of hog hoops? no. however, am I -–like the loudmouthed morons of this state—- stupid enough to think that Coach Pelphrey is to blame for all the program’s ills? also no. these are the same morons who said Danny Ford (owner of 5 conference & 1 nat’l championships) couldn’t coach as he was building our high school football program into one of SEC-caliber. thanx for the decade of hootie, by the way.
unless we pull a Calipari-esque rent-a-team (and ultimately go on probation), this program has to be rebuilt. i’m not guaranteeing that he will, but Pelphrey has a good enough resume –as a player, assistant, and head coach– to get the job done. he just needs a crystal ball to determine which student-athletes are going to be team players, stay out of trouble, and go to class (not easily done).
as for those idiots demanding that the athletic director announce minimum-achievement standards for next season (in order for Pelphrey to keep his job), um, this is why I refer to you as idiots. you can’t expect your coach to be able to recruit if you’re warning those recruits that you’re probably going to fire the guy who is recruiting them. cheese & crackers, it’s embarrassing to be associated with you dorks.
oh, yeah…go hogs!

@petty – Matt, thanks for the attemp last night. I don’t remember where I saw it, but someone ask the question why someone would want to look at the books? It seems to matter most to those of us who live downtown. The BB&BS crap that they pull every year is the prime exapmple of why this was a necessary move.

Thanks for your support on this issue. I will personally be asking Eric why he didn’t go along with the rest of Ward 2?

@Dickson St Worker - Here's the story about last night's meeting. In short, the First Thursday event will now be managed by the Visitors Bureau and the Farmers' Market ordinance was left on the first reading in order to work out some details.

I think we’re in good shape. There are two things we need; a good center and an energy player off the bench. Go ahead and build around Fortson penetrating and either pitching out to Clark or finding Powell for an easy bucket. I think the offense was pretty good once Fortson got back, but we couldn’t stop anyone inside or keep a team from getting open 3’s all year. Pel should stay for at least another couple years. We’ll need to figure out how to play defense before we can get to the next level, though.

Theoretically, yes. Copenhagen has more than 50% of all their vehicle trips happening by bike now, and more than 35% of all their commuter trips.

Doing that takes a commitment to “alternative” transportation that this government just isn’t willing to make. No one besides me was even willing to say anything at the budget meetings about the fact that our trails budget was cut in half this year.

This season had some of the thinnest crowds I’ve seen at home games, and some of the most frustrating loses. I’m talking about games where we were leading or really competitive right until the end when we would choke. That seemed to be a recurring theme for this season.

I hope Pelphrey can stay.
