Arkansas One Step Closer to the Fulmer Cup? *Updated*

Posted on 29 July 2008 by the Steve

So, with all the recent trouble lately involving members of the University of Arkansas football team, Arkansas has moved leaps and bounds lately in something popular sports blog Every Day Should Be Saturday calls the “Fulmer Cup.”

What’s that, you might ask? It’s not a good thing. Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer is notorious for recruiting and catering to, ahem, let’s call them ne’er-do-wells. So much so that EDSBS named their troublemakers report after him. But Fulmer’s team isn’t the one making headlines recently. It’s Arkansas.

Arkansas has moved up into the sixth place spot for the “Fulmer Cup” thanks to Marques Wade’s latest arrest this week.

Well. At least we are ranked?

If you follow the Razorbacks, you probably know that this summer most of the linebacking core, and now Wade has been arrested for something or other. To Bobby Petrino’s credit, he’s been swift and fair in doling out punishments, however. Star linebacker Freddy Fairchild was kicked off the team earlier this summer for some pretty severe domestic abuse charges, and it was announced today that Wade and linebacker Freddy Burton were suspended for the first two games of the 2008 season.

“We have suspended Freddy and Marques for the first two games of the season,” Petrino said in a statement released by the university. “While the athletic department policy in development for addressing these types of issues calls for a one game suspension, I felt that a two-game suspension was appropriate in both of these cases.”

Kuddos for not going easy on these guys. Also, kuddos for not kicking them off the team. Everyone deserves a second chance.

In other news, Houston Nutt is still a weirdo.

Bobby Petrino on College Football Live Tuesday

Posted on 22 July 2008 by Ted Dancin'

We were pumped to find a brand new episode of ESPN’s College Football Live waiting in our DVRs this evening. Is it really that close to football season? Awesome!

Make sure to set your DVR for Tuesday’s edition of CFB Live because Bobby Petrino is the featured guest. That’s right. They’ve either given up on their tired attempts to bore the hell out of everyone with Petrino flaming over at the ESPN HQ or they’re going to give him one hell of a ride on national TV.

Either way, I say it’s great to have a spot on the second episode of the year. What do you think?

A Round of Golf w/ Petrino & Pel

Posted on 15 June 2008 by the Steve

Are you a freaky Razorback fanatic? Do you have more money that you know what to do with? Do you like to play golf?

If you answered yes to all of those questions, then we at the Flyer have the ebay auction for you.

Right now, you can bid on and win a chance to play golf with both UA football coach Bobby Petrino as well as UA Basketball coach John Pelphrey. At the same time.

The auction is to benefit John Pelphrey’s new charity, Pel’s Pals, which will benefit children’s charities, with a focus on neonatal care.

As of Sunday night, the bidding is at $1,225, but the auction doesn’t end until Friday so you can bet this kind of thing will end up costing someone a pretty penny.

We at the Flyer do not have a policy against accepting corporate gifts, and any of us here would be happy to accept the round of golf as a gift (even though we don’t really play golf). I’m sure we could think of a couple things to ask them both about.

One thing to note is someone responsible for setting up the auction has a sense of humor, as the package comes with “free shipping.”

Now, if we could only do something about that logo…

SI writer pretends to still care about Petrino/Falcons

Posted on 05 June 2008 by Ted Dancin'

It must’ve been a light weekend for SI writer Peter King as he managed to fill two of three Quotes of the Week for his latest Monday Morning QB column with Bobby Petrino-related material. In June.

I can see how a writer, in a desperate fit of urgency, could joke with oneself and possibly even say out loud to the guy sitting to the left, “Well, I guess I could throw in a couple of Bobby Petrino remarks to fill the gaps, ha ha ha!” But actually going through with it is just sad. Not sad as in, “Aw poor dude” but sad as in “Wow. Really? No, wait. Really?! Bwaa ha ha!”

The saddest part of the column is that King actually wrote the following words and then forgot to go back and erase them before submitting the story to the website guys:

The most incredible thing, to me, is that Petrino has never called Arthur Blank to say, “I’m sorry.”

The guys over at Razorback Expats asked the question, “Seriously, what is it with these guys and their obsession with Petrino?” The answer to me is simple. It’s bull. Nobody still gives a shit about Bobby Petrino leaving the Atlanta Falcons. Not me, not you, not millionaire Arthur Blank and certainly not Peter King. It’s impossible to still care about that story, especially since we’re talking about football here and not friggin’ 7th grade romance.

This is the part where I almost typed, “Get over it, ya’ll” but that would be to assume that the press isn’t over it which I fully believe they are. At this point, they’re just being lazy. And that’s incredibly lame.

sg Speaks: Time to Clean the Hog Pen

Posted on 02 January 2008 by sg

In the second quarter of yesterday’s Cotton Bowl, the cameras revealed David Lee in the coaching booth above the field. The offense was on the field running through their gambit of running plays and Lee was, well, not looking at the field. He must have been looking through his offensive playbook. He must not have gotten to the passing plays until late in the fourth quarter, since we didn’t pass much. Or, just maybe, he was paying homage to Houston Nutt by being stubborn and running predictably nearly every down.

So that’s how we pay our respect to Frank Broyles? By dressing up in all-red uniforms and being classically under prepared for another game? Only, this time we had nearly a month to get ready and over half a coaching staff that also happens to work for Ole Miss. But we shouldn’t have been in the Cotton Bowl in the first place. It is my staunch opinion that Arkansas was chosen solely based on how many tickets we could sell – which was practically bragged about over and over during the telecast when the announcers kept saying how this was the fastest Cotton Bowl to ever sell out. We shouldn’t have been there. Interestingly enough, neither should have Missouri. They got hosed in the BCS selection and were a far better team to play in Dallas, Texas.

This game was a disaster from nearly the beginning. Err, rather, after the first drive resulted in a strangely missed field goal from Tejada, nothing seemed to click after that. Hell… we passed on the first play and had a first down! That’s opening up the game with something new and was a good first step. Then we fell back into our sleepwalking offensive routine and never got back on track.

Here’s what I don’t understand. How can you have a month to prepare and come out that flat on offense and defense? I read somewhere the other day (during the whole DMac eligibility concern) that everything was being prepared with him in mind – that they had even installed some new plays just for him.

What plays? Hint, there were none. We had the same offensive unit that we had all year – two amazing running backs, an amazing offensive line, an amazing fullback, a potentially amazing receiver (and only one that can really catch the ball) and a quarterback that has never been capable of taking a game into his own hands.

We had one month to prepare and get something in the passing game installed. One month for David Lee, who came from four years with the Dallas Cowboys just to run our offense, to “open up the playbook.” One month to help lessen the giant target that DMac wears on his jersey, the one that all other teams aim for. But all Lee could do when shown on camera was to pretend he even cared about this game while he looked at houses in Mississippi on the internet.

The weird thing was that I wasn’t so concerned about our offense before the game. I was more worried about the defense and how exactly we would contain the high octane passing attack of Missouri. Guess what, we did. Guess what else, it didn’t matter since Missouri knows how to adjust DURING the game and not just at half-time.

Which brings me to another point, half-time adjustments. What exactly did we adjust during half-time? Our pads? Because we came out and ran the exact same plays and got burned the exact same ways on defense. We were so scared of being passed on that Tony Temple, alone, ran for 281 yards and had four touchdowns. Let me repeat, 281 yards. Missouri is a passing team, remember? Chase Daniel was in New York with DMac as a Heisman finalist. You don’t send QBs to New York if your team is a running team.

It was a pitiful effort from our tattered coaching staff and January 3, 2008 can’t come any sooner (that’s the day Petrino is expected to announce his coaching staff). Our Hogs have seen better days, and while the next few seasons may be rebuilding years, we will definitely see better again.
