Hogs can’t put away the Vols

  • By Dustin Bartholomew · Wednesday, Feb 4, 2009

The Razorbacks lost their sixth SEC game tonight, losing to the Tennessee Volunteers 72-74.

The Hogs had four players in double figures, but Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism were too much for the Razorbacks inside, and Bobby Maze scored 13 points off the bench on 3-5 three point shooting, and a 15 footer with 5 seconds remaining that proved to be the game winner for the Vols.

The Hogs had a chance to tie after Maze’s shot, as Stefan Welsh took the inbounds pass the length of the floor but missed a shot close to the basket, and Michael Washington’s tip in at the buzzer rimmed out, and 16,000 Razorback fans left Bud Walton arena left disappointed.

Welsh led the Razorbacks with 22 points, Courtney Fortson had 19, and Mike Washington had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

After a promising start to the season, the Razorbacks NCAA tournament hopes are dissipating quickly. The Razorbacks are now in last place in the SEC West, falling tonight to 1-6 in conference play.

Player of the game: Stefan Welsh. When the Hogs could do nothing on offense in the first half, Stefan kept the Hogs in the game. Despite missing the game-tying shot at the end, Welsh had a good game, and played some good defense with 3 steals against the Vols.

Step up player of the game: Jason Henry. Henry looked great on defense, and scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds against the Vols in a rare starting role tonight in place of Michael Sanchez.
