Summer Movie Season is Upon Us

It’s still Spring outside, but in movie theaters around the US, Summer movie season is officially upon us… and thank the maker for that. January thru April tends to deliver very little in terms of quality cinema and this movie-lover is feeling the need… The need for speed good movies. So break out your cargo shorts and your wife’s biggest purse, stock them full of drinks and candy and prepare to spend countless hours at your local theater enjoying some sweet Summer flicks.

Starting off the season is the first in what will hopefully become a successful spin-off franchise; X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hugh Jackman once again sports a weird haircut and adamantium claws to deliver the origin story of almost everyone’s favorite mutant. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this article, the Summer’s first big flick is rocking a rather un-impressive 38% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. However, I don’t think that’s gonna stop the legions of comic-book and comic-book-movie nerds fans from heading out in droves to catch Wolverine in action.

Also, Gambit’s lame. There. I said it.

Unfortunately, our first date movie of the summer also comes out today and boy am I excited. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past promises to excite bad movie fans(i.e. your girlfriend. Sorry, but she likes bad movies) and bore/tug at the heartstrings of men across the country. Sure, Wooderson, er, Matthew McConaughey will have a couple of chuckle-inducing lines, but I’d recommend avoiding it at all costs. If your lady tries to drag you out to see it, it would be wise to feign swine flu:

“Oh, babe, I’d really like to go. I mean, you know how much I loved McConaughey in Fools Gold. It’s just that I’m pretty sure I’m coming down with swine flu… and the runs. So go ahead and go with [insert her best friends name here] and have a great time. Just promise me that you won’t tell me too much about it afterwards because I’m sure I’ll see it soon. Love you.”

Are any of you planning on catching X-Men Origins: Wolverine or Ghosts of Girlfriends Past this weekend? What summer movies are you looking forward to the most? Personally, I’m amped about Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter, Funy People, GI Joe and Inglorious Basterds. Can’t. Freaking. Wait!
