2009 Solar Splash begins today at Lake Fayetteville

The World Championship of intercollegiate solar/electric boating starts today at Lake Fayetteville. What’s that mean?

It’s a boat race / engineering competition. Awesome? Yup.

19 colleges from around the country will compete, along with our own University of Arkansas. Technical inspections start today, followed by a “Solar Slalom” tomorrow, with the real action beginning this weekend with the Sprint and Endurance events.

Last year, the University of Arkansas finished in third place in the overall competition behind the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University (Ohio), and our arch-rival Istanbul Technical University. They’re like the Ole Miss of the solar boating competition world.

Maybe.

The weather is for this weekend is looking perfect for a solar boat race, so there really isn’t a reason not to check it out.
