Shortcuts: Monday 7/13

Shortcuts are hand-picked bits of news, commentary and info from around the city, the region and even from beyond the state line.

Here are today’s Shortcuts:

LOCAL

No more free NWAnews.com
Don’t expect any more links to the Northwest Arkansas Times’ stories here on Shortcuts come August 5th. Apparently the internets, including that Google thing and those silly Facebook links and Twitter-tweeters are just a fad. If a story is written but no one is there to read it, is it really news?

UPDATE: We just spoke to the Northwest Arkansas Time’s online editor Jon Schleuss who stressed to me that there will be some free content still available on NWAnews.com after August 5th such as “blogs, polls, breaking news alerts, original videos and more” (quote taken from NWAnews.com) Theoretically, it would still be possible for us here at the Flyer to provide links to these things via our Shortcuts posts and through Facebook and Twitter. Also, this free content would still be available from Google without the need for logging in after following a link. The rest of the daily content – that which is available in the print edition – would require a login and password and therefore, would not be something we’d consider pointing our readers towards for more information on a local issue. We hope that helps to clear things up.

Winning!
I once won a coloring contest at Jose’s when I was in the third grade. I drew a scuba diver. The Morning News won something last week, too. Winning is awesome.

NEARBY

Anne Pressly’s house demolished
The house in Little Rock where a former KATV reporter was murdered last fall was torn down this morning. The property owners plan to rebuild on the lot.

Sorry, South Carolina. Sorta.
So far, Arkansas’ Lottery Director and a VP have both been snagged from South Carolina and it looks like a third is on the way.

ELSEWHERE

Kids these days
Apparently, kids are different from adults when it comes to media. Who knew?

India, meet Wal-Mart
Dontcha just hate it when you go to Wal-Mart for some paneer but end up with a cart full of other stuff and then you realize you forgot the paneer!? (India’s first Wal-Mart)
