Weekend: July 24, 25, 26

Did you know that Friday comes from the German word freibiernon, which loosely translated means “It’s ok. You can have a beer with lunch.”

Isn’t Etymology fascinating? Freibiernon, everybody!

Tonight, if I were you, I’d head to the Boom Boom Room for Vulture Whale, from Birmingham Alabama. I checked out some of their tunes on Myspace, and it’s pretty awesome. Word on the street is these dudes freak out live as well. Locals Hot Shot Karate will open the show.

I’d also try to make it over to the Smoke and Barrel tonight, where 1 oz Jig will be getting funky. Those guys rule.

As nice as the weather’s been, it’s probably a good idea to head to Smiling Jacks right after work for Bent Grass Green and The Smithstonians too, if you can make it.

If you like metal, you should head to the Gypsy tonight to check out the Baptized in Beer tour, with Lazerus AD, Bison BC, Woe of Tyrants, and Battle Within.

The weather is going to be near perfect for the Farmers Market tomorrow morning.

We don’t talk a lot about charity golf tournaments here on the Flyer, but tomorrow there’s one that’s a little more our style. There’s a putt-putt tournament at Gator Golf tomorrow morning at 10:00 am, and all the proceeds raised go to the Humane Society. Support dogs.

Saturday night, maybe you should go to Nightbird Books for their Local Author Spotlight with Richard Massey & Laurna Joyce.

Tunes-wise, your best bet for tomorrow night is Oicho Kabu and The Sloan Twins (Memphis Pencils) at the Smoke and Barrel.

Sunday night, Cletus Got Shot is at George’s for Monster Mug Night, and the lovely Shannon Wurst (3 Penny Acre) is at the Pesto Cafe.

That’s what I’d do if I were you. The full list is below, and feel free to add anything we may have missed in the comments.
