Weekend: July 31, Aug 1,2

  • By Dustin Bartholomew · Friday, Jul 31, 2009

If I had to characterize each day of the work week with one word, Monday would be Buttsday, Tuesday would be Stupidday, Wednesday would be Wienerday, and Thursday would be Donkeyparty.

Friday, though, Friday would be Sexyday. Or Unicornsofhappinessday (one word). Whatever.

Tonight, I’d check out some tunes if I were you.

There’s a big house show tonight at a place called the Scull Creek Dungeon, with Crisco Kids, Last Chance, The Thing That Always Explodes, and Egyptr. I’d definitely go to that.

Fayetteville’s jazziest, most badical video-game-music band, the One Ups, are playing at the Smoke and Barrel tonight as well, and Fayetteville’s most awesome-tacular rapper Lucio will be doing a short set to open the show. Also a good idea.

Then, it is someone named Gonzo’s birthday, and Gonzo must be pretty popular because he got George’s to let him have his birthday party there, and he got about 100 bands to agree to play his party. Benjamin Del Shreve, Hardaway and the Commoners, The Poggs, Randall Shreve, Kingsdown, Will Gunselman, and The European Sons will all be serenading Gonzo. Great job!

Tomorrow, you’d better go to the Farmers Market. For one thing, the weather is still pretty mild for August, and for another thing, the Farmers Market season isn’t gonna last forever. Get down there and get some plants and vegetables and crafts. Pronto.

Tomorrow night, if you’ve never seen Opal Fly play, what’s your problem? She’ll be at the UARK Bowl to kick off a whole lineup of events they recently announced over there. Try it.

There’s a big show at the Smoke and Barrel tomorrow night as well, with David’s Pegasus, Hosta, and a relatively new band that’s freaking people out in Fayetteville, Ctrl-Alt-Del.

It’s also Jerry Garcia’s birthday, and we all know what that means, right? If you guessed a show with former Jerry Garcia Band leader Melvin Seals with Mountain of Venus at George’s, you’re correct. If you guessed something else, you may also be correct. There’s no way of knowing, really.

On Sunday, if you like Sarah Hughes, you’ve got two chances to see her. For the morning people, you can head over to Common Grounds for brunch and listen to Sarah on the Patio. For the night people, you can head to George’s for Monster Mug Night and hear her over there. Two choices!

Those are some of the things we are excited about. What are you guys doing this weekend?
