Weekend: Oct 9, 10, 11

Wanna know why Fayetteville rules? Weekends like this weekend.

We got sports. We got fashion. We got art. We’ve got pancake breakfasts, live music including Jazz, indie, hip-hop, and rock and roll, the farmers markets, charitable events, tailgating, live theatre and comedy improv. If you can’t find something fun to do in Fayetteville this weekend, you’re probably a lame-o.

Today, the Blair Public Library turns 5 years old, and there’s a party going on over there at 3:00 pm. Birthday cake and lemonade will be served. It will be crunk.

Tonight is action packed.

You could check out an artist reception for Lauren Embree of l : e designs at Ultra Studios (more on that later) beginning at 6:00 pm. The Lafayette Lounge Players (members of Hardaway and the Commoners) will be playing, and Brooke Benham will also be debuting some new Fall fashions.

Also in the mill district in the early evening, the Drew Packard Jazz Trio will be at the brand new Greenhouse Grille.

Big Uns will be at George’s for happy hour. They draw a huge crowd, and there will be old people dancing.

Pagnozzi Charities will be having their Ultimate Tailgate and sports memorabilia auction tonight at the Fayetteville Town Center. Over 100 items are available in the silent auction, including items autographed by Albert Pujols, Jerry Rice, Michael Phelps, Bob Gibson, as well as by current (Ryan Mallett) and former Razorbacks (Darren McFadden).

Another early show to check out is Perpetual Werewolf at Qdoba. It starts at 7:00, and will most likely be the rocking-est show Qdoba has ever seen.

University of Arkansas Theatre will perform Death of a Salesman at the Walton Arts Center at 8:00. There is also comedy improv at the UARK Bowl with Phunbags comedy improv troupe.

There’s a huge hip hop show at the Smoke and Barrel tonight with Little Rock’s Epiphany, Gina Gee, and Rockst*r. We saw Piph and Gina Gee there a few months ago, and it was incredible.

Also worth checking out late night tonight, The Plaid Jackets, Well, Well, Well, Rip Off & Take Cover will be at the Boom Boom Room, and Will Gunselman will be at George’s.

Tomorrow morning, you can start with some pancakes from the Fayetteville Fire Department’s Pancake Breakfast beginning at 6:00 am at the Fire Station near the square, and then get yourself a couple pumpkins at the Farmers’ Market.

The Razorbacks are in action at 11:00 am against the Tigers/War Eagles/lame-o’s from Auburn. It’s a home game, but if you don’t have tickets, it will also be televised by ESPN.

If sports aren’t your thing, tomorrow afternoon you can check out another art opening at Jammin’ Java, when photographer Stephanie Conway will be selling prints of her work for $20, and each print will result in $80 to be donated to the Fayetteville Animal Shelter/The Humane Society of the Ozarks.

After that, there’s another chance to see Death of a Salesman at the WAC, or Phunbags comedy improv at the UARK Bowl.

Tunes-wise, BDS will be playing a show at Grub’s, and Sarah Hughes will be at the Smoke and Barrel. George’s has Dallas Texas’ Scott McCurry & The Mercenaries which sounds pretty sweet.

On Sunday, there are some pretty good day-time music options. You can check out Kevin Baker at the Greenhouse Grille for brunch at 10:30, DJ Soulfree at Common Grounds at 11:00, and the Hogeye Ramblers will be at Smilin’ Jacks from 12:00-2:00. Update: the Hogeye Rambers at Smilin’ Jacks has been cancelled.
