Arkansas officially accepts Liberty Bowl invitation

The worst kept secret in town is no longer a secret, as Arkansas officially announced that the Razorback football team had accepted an invitation to play in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis against Conference USA champion East Carolina.

It had been widely reported by multiple media outlets over the last week that Arkansas would play in the Liberty Bowl, and the official announcement came on Sunday.

Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long estimated that Arkansas fans had purchased about 15,000 tickets in advance of the announcement on Sunday.

Arkansas’ Liberty Bowl opponent, East Carolina earned a trip to the Liberty Bowl on Saturday after knocking off the Houston Cougars 38-32 in the Conference USA championship game. East Carolina is coached by Fayetteville High School graduate Skip Holtz, who is also the son of former Razorback Head Coach Lou Holtz.

The game against ECU will be the 4th appearance in the Liberty Bowl for the Razorbacks, and the first bowl appearance under head coach Bobby Petrino. Arkansas has lost all three of its previous appearances in the Liberty Bowl.

The game is scheduled for 4:30 pm on Saturday, January 2nd, and will be televised by ESPN.
