Weekend To-do: May 14-16

I think it was Shakespeare who said to Juliet (in “Romeo and Juliet,” his famous movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Daines,) “Beware the Ides of May.”

Until today, I thought he was just talking gibberish Shakespeare language. Like, “wherefore art thou” or “Et tu, Brute,” but now I’ve gotta wonder if there’s some kind of meaning to that phrase.

I googled “what did Shakespeare mean by ‘beware the ides of may'” on Wikipedia, but I didn’t get any search results. Next, I’m gonna try that text a librarian thing.

Friday night, there’s a big show at George’s. The Bel Airs and Joe Giles play happy hour, and then Bear Colony, Randall Shreve, Plu, Monster Heart and Messy Sparkles play late night.

The Memphis Pencils, Fire Don’t Care and David’s Pegasus are playing a going away party for Haley Duke at Uncle Gaylords. Haley is moving to San Francisco. You remember her, right?

Ceramic Cow debut a new show at UARK Bowl. It’s called Bigfoot Love, and it’s a one-man comedy about a guy who’s life has been destroyed by Bigfoot. Yeow.

Alt-country band (just kidding, don’t freak) 1 oz Jig is at Smoke & Barrel, and Chicago-based folk-duo Small Potatoes are at the Good Folk House.

Sports-wise, the Razorback baseballers will play their last home series of the season at Baum Stadium against the Gamecocks of South Carolina, that is, unless (until?) they host a regional in the NCAA tournament on their way to Omaha.

On Saturday, the Farmers’ Market starts at 7:00 am on the square. Get yourself some vegetables.

After that, Mayor Lioneld Jordan will read a proclamation about Bike to Work Week on the steps of Fayetteville Public Library, followed by a big ol’ bike ride down Scull Creek trail.

Saturday night is gonna rule.

NWA Roller Derby is back in action at the Starlight Skatium, with the Arkansas Killbillies taking on the Dallas Derby Devils. Watch the Killbillies kick them in the butts.

Mississippi-born singer-songwriter Claire Holley is at Greenhouse Grille Saturday night. Todd and I had the privilege of playing a show with her a couple years ago at the Little Rock Film Festival. She’s incredible.

Cletus Got Shot will be back at Smoke & Barrel on Saturday night with Kansas City’s Adam Lee & The Dead Horse Sound Company. Whiskey will be consumed.

Have you guys ever been to the Warehouse? It’s a new DIY venue behind Herman’s(ish) on College, and Surf De Soleil, Samurai Luncheon, Catamaran and Skyler Gambert will be playing their instruments. It’s also a benefit for The American Red Cross, specifically for local disaster relief. We talked to Samurai Luncheon recently. Remember?

Some of you guys probably remember Six Hung Sprung, right? They’re getting back together for a show at George’s Saturday night.

Finally, there’s a big show at Rogue with Bent Grass Green, Sara Hughes, Ouachita River Band and Beans n Cornbread. Embarrassingly, I still haven’t seen Beans n Cornbread, but I’ve heard good things.

That’s not even the half of it. What are you guys doing this weekend?
