Weekend To-do: June 11-13

Every summer for the last five years or so, I’ve said the same thing. “I need to make two new friends this summer; one with a pool, and one with a boat.”

So far, the search has been completely fruitless. To date, I have zero friends with pools, or boats, so I’d like to take this opportunity in the opening of my weekly weekend post to ask any of you out there with pools and/or boats if you’d like to be friends.

We’ll need to get to know each other quickly, though, because I’d like to spend this coming weekend, in between some of the events listed below of course, in your pool/on your boat. Here’s some information; I like dogs, ice cream, beer, pools, boats, and chips and salsa.

My friends are cool and all, but I’d gladly trade at least two of them for you, and your pool and/or boat. This offer stands until I find said friend(s). Thanks in advance, and I look forward to getting to know your boat.

Friday night, you’ve got a rare opportunity to get yourself into the Guinness Book of World Records at Wilson Park Pool. Fayetteville Parks & Recreation has organized an attempt to host the worlds largest swimming lesson in a single location. It starts at 6 p.m., but you’d better get there by 5:45 of so. Later on, the summer Dive-in Movies series begins with Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.

There’s a famous band at the AMP called The Goo Goo Dolls. Heard of ’em? Locals A Good Fight open the show and as of this morning, tickets are still available.

The legendary Cate Brothers are at George’s for happy hour, and it’s a benefit for George’s doorman Neill Williamson. He’s been in three accidents this year, the last of which required intensive physical therapy. The show will raise some money to help pay for a few of his medical bills.

The Pope County Bootleggers are at Smoke & Barrel, and Matt Jenkins & Jeff Kearney of 1 oz. Jig will play a few tunes at Greenhouse Grille.

Walton Arts Center has Art of Wine events all weekend. If you don’t already have tickets, you might be out of luck. Several of the events are sold out.

There’s a house show at The GROJ with Denver’s Woodsman and Tjutjuna. Mondo Blackout opens.

On Saturday, you can watch the Razorback baseball team kick Arizona State in the ribs. It’s on ESPNU.

Then, maybe you should stop by St. Paul’s Episcopal to check out “Nunsense,” a musical comedy directed by Ceramic Cow productions Mark Landon Smith. All of the proceeds go to benefit some real life nuns who run an orphanage that was devastated by the earthquake in Haiti.

There’s a better-than-average chance that I could find my friend with a boat at Lake Fayetteville this weekend. There are Solar Splash events on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. More on that is here.

Apartment 5 is at Smoke & Barrel for free Saturday, which should be awesome. They recently got back from doing a bit of recording at Ardent Studios in Memphis.

Also Saturday, Austin-based singer/songwriter Michael Fracasso is at the Hembree House (home of 2/3 of 3 Penny Acre) and Hardaway & the Commoners are at George’s. The Commoners were set to open for MC Hammer, but the Hammer cancelled. Too legit my ass.
