Wednesday To-do: June 23

This morning the U.S. soccer team faces Algeria to begin its last chance to advance to the World Cup final 16.

The bad news is that another signature tie won’t do much good unless England can’t get past Slovenia. The good news is Algeria hasn’t scored a goal this World Cup yet. Both games begin at 9 a.m. and are on ESPN and ESPN2, respectively.

Speaking of good news, FIX is bringing yet another excellent DJ to Fayetteville this evening. Brooklyn’s Nick Catchdubs is in town and he brings a stack of accomplishments and praise likely taller than his entire record collection. Nick’s solos shows are praised by Nylon Magazine as “guaranteed to get people dancing” and his mixes are so lauded, they’re becoming the new 50s radio. The Chicago Reader called him “tastemaking royalty who can break an act single-handedly.”

Before co-founding dance-rap label Fool’s Gold, Nick was associate editor at The FADER, holding the reigns of the magazine’s radio show “The Let Out” and writing features on everyone from Snoop Dogg to Jenny Lewis.

Details here, please.

What’s to do before you dance? Ethan Gilsdorf is at the Fayetteville Public Library as part of the month-long Fantasy Fanatics series. A book and film critic for the Boston Globe, Gilsdorf will discuss the appeal of online gaming, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and role-playing games. Gilsdorf knows his geek and to prove it, he took no shortcuts when titling his book, Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms. His talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Walker Community Room.
