Monday To-Do: Aug. 9

It’s August 9, 2010 and that means you’ve got roughly two weeks before all hell breaks loose in the Dickson Street area. In exactly seven days, parking in every lot and on every street surrounding the Entertainment District will become paid.

As a local, you’ll have one week to get used to it before the UA is back in session. Of course, the incoming freshmen won’t know the difference, but the other 75 percent of returning students face the reality of not having any idea what’s going on down there.

Should be … interesting?

Take advantage of a confusion-free parking experience tonight when you’re out trying to find something to do. Use the lot behind Smoke & Barrel Tavern. It may be your last chance.

Speaking of Smoke & Barrel, what is it with that place and bands who share members with Mars Volta? It was the second Monday in August of last year that we wrote about Zechs Marquise. On the same Monday this year, it’s Free Moral Agents. The Long Beach, CA collective of musicians featuring Mars Volta’s Ikey Owens on keyboards is in town with L.A.’s NOCANDO. Locals Fauxnz opens the show. There’s a $5 cover.

Just around the corner at U.S. Pizza is Jeff Kearney and down the street at Powerhouse is Jason Strode.

Outside of the Dickson Street area, there’s a metal show at Drifter’s, Darren Ray is at Pesto Cafe, and Jeff Pratt is at JJ’s.

Here’s all that in a list:

Monday, Aug. 9, 2010
Powerhouse: Jason Strode Band
JJ’s Grill n Chill: Jeff Pratt
US Pizza Co: Jeff Kearney
Drifters: Battle Within / Dodge City / Take This To The Grave / Such Creatures Exist
The Perk: Open Acoustic Jam

Smoke & Barrel Tavern: Free Moral Agents / NOCANDO / Fauxnz
