Justin Walker and Chuck Meré perform in Step 1 Theatre’s ‘The Chamber’ which opens Thursday night, Jan. 27 at B-Unlimited Theatre in Fayetteville.

We don’t know why, or when, or how it has happened, but theatre has exploded in Fayetteville recently.

With the success of UA Theatre, TheatreSquared, Ceramic Cow, Arts Live Theatre, and newcomers Artist Laboratory Theatre, Fayetteville was already experiencing a mini-rennaisaince of quality, original productions.

Then in August, Step 1 Theatre emerged, and theatre-rich Fayetteville got even richer.

The new company is the creation of co-artistic directors William Grayson and Gabe Templin, who set out to create an experience that would appeal to a whole new generation of theatre go-ers, and that would also benefit the community in other ways. Step 1 donates a portion of the proceeds from each of their performances to a local charity.

Tonight (Jan. 27), the company will debut a brand new work by Grayson called “The Chamber” at B-Unlimited Theatre.

The play, starring locals Chuck Mere (Quitting Movie) and Justin Walker, unfolds in a single scene and is a story of trust and betrayal between two long-time friends, and a life and death contest that will forever change their lives.

Four performances are scheduled, on Jan. 27-28 at 8 p.m., and Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $10, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Seven Hills Homeless Shelter.
