Fayetteville bicycle festival begins April 16

The first ever Bicycle Fayetteville Days, a multi-day festival celebrating bicyclists of all ages and abilities, is set to begin April 16 on the downtown square. All events are free and open to the public.

Gear Swap
The event kicks off with a gear swap at 10 a.m. in the lobby of East Square Plaza. Participants can bring any components, gear or complete bicycles for trade or barter. Table space costs $5 and can be paid for on the day of the event. Participating retailers include The Bike Route, Lewis & Clark, Phat Tire Bike Shop, and Green Wheel.

Art bike show and parade
An art bike show and parade will begin at noon. Members of the public are invited to be creative and design a weatherproof and rideable art bike for the event. Judging of all entries will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by a parade at 2:30 p.m. from the square to the Walton Arts Center and back.

New Belgium Cruiser raffle

2011 New Belgium Cruiser

A 2011 New Belgium Cruiser bicycle will be raffled off during the event. Tickets will be on sale April 16 and at the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market on April 9. Elsewhere, tickets can be purchased at all Arsaga’s Espresso Cafe locations, Jammin Java and Nightbird Books. (A previous version of this paragraph stated that there would also be cruisers for sale, but that was incorrect.)

Organized rides
The kick-off event will also include activities for both young and older riders. A “Rug Rat Ride” for young children on tricycles or small bicycles will travel around the square at around 2 p.m. The day’s events will conclude at 3:30 p.m. with an “Urban Bicycle Ride” to Mellow Mushroom Pizza.

Beyond April 16
Throughout the following week, group rides and bicycle related events are scheduled around town. An urban ride “allegedly” led by the Axles of Evil bike gang will start at the Fayetteville Public library at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17. A women’s open shop will be hosted that same day by Bike City Recyclery from noon to 3 p.m. The Ozark Off-Road Cyclists will lead a mountain bike trail ride around Lake Fayetteville at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23.

Other events in conjunction with Bicycle Fayetteville Days are posted on the website www.bikefaydays.org.
