Some people can run really fast. Others people can lift a lot of weight over their head.
There are also people out there who are really good at eating hot dogs. If you are one of those people, the folks at the Lightbulb Club are hosting the contest for you.
Locals Chris “Clunk” Selby and Wade Ogle are hosting the preliminary round of the Man Bites Dog: Hot Dog Eating Fiasco at 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at The Lightbulb Club.
According to Clunk, his brand of hot dog eating competition is more about speed than quantity.
“I don’t want people to get sick, so it will be about who can eat two hot dogs the fastest,” he told us.
Clunk is no stranger to hot dog eating contests. He hosted two of them back in 2002 at JR’s Lightbulb Club.
“They were supposed to be quarterly,” he said. “Both of the first two were in 2002 though, so I guess this is the third quarterly hot dog eating contest, nine years later.”
The preliminary event on Saturday is one of two chances to qualify for the hot dog eating championship at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 22 during the Block Street Block Party.
The other qualifying round will be held just an hour-and-a-half before the championship at 3 p.m. on May 22 (also during the Block Party). Obviously, those who qualify at the May 14 prelim will have an advantage.
If you need an incentive to compete, Lighbulb Club owner Wade Ogle is promising fabulous, amazing decent prizes for the winners.
“There will be awesome, cheap, random, not-broken prizes at both competitions,” Ogle said.
To enter, just starve yourself for a few hours, and show up at one of the qualifying rounds. The schedule, including both preliminary rounds and the championship, is below.
