Police: Arkansas Gold and Silver Exchange employee shot armed robber

Fayetteville police released a statement Wednesday afternoon with information about an attempted armed robbery that took place Tuesday at Arkansas Gold and Silver Exchange, located at 1722 N. College Avenue.

Police said Nathan Harold Chism, 32, entered the business shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday with the intention of robbing it. During the robbery attempt, police say Chism stabbed store employee Christopher Leach in the arm.

Leach, 26, was armed with a handgun and shot Chism in the torso, officials said.

Both Leach and Chism were transported to Washington Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police say Leach was treated and released, but Chism remains hospitalized and is listed in stable condition.
