Expect lane closings on I-540 through Tuesday

  • By Todd Gill · Saturday, Jul 9, 2011

Expect to encounter some lane closings on I-540 in the area of the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit over the next few days.

Also, some restrictions will be in place in that area for the next couple months.

The outside northbound lane, between mile markers 62 and 63, will be closed to allow for the placement of a precast concrete barrier wall on the outside shoulder of the interstate.

Closing times:
· 8 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday
· 8 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday
· 11 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday

Restrictions

Following placement of the barrier wall, the northbound inside and outside lanes of the highway will be reduced in width and the outside shoulder will be closed to allow for the construction of a new entrance ramp and removal of the existing ramp onto I-540.

Lane width restrictions are expected to be in place for 60 days.

In July 2010, the Arkansas State Highway Commission awarded a contract in the amount of $4 million, to Sweetser Construction, Inc. of Fayetteville for the project to implement short-term improvements at the I-540/Highway 62/180 (Exit 62) interchange.  The project includes radii improvements to the I-540 on and off ramps, radii improvements to Shiloh Drive (west frontage road) and Futrall Drive (east frontage road) and the relocation of the northbound on-ramp onto I-540.

The project is scheduled to be completed by November 2011.
