Name your own price for cats at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter starts Monday, July 25

Remember when Radiohead released In Rainbows on a “name-your-own-price” basis, and everyone freaked out?

That’s kind of what the Fayetteville Animal Shelter is doing, except instead of an album, they’re offering name-your-own-price cats.

The shelter announced on Thursday that folks interested in adopting a cat may do so between July 25 and Aug. 25 for as much as they’re willing to pay (with a $5 minimum fee.)

The promotion is called “Pick Your Purrrice.” (Get it?)

“We had such great success with placing cats on our Free Cat Friday event that we thought we would try an extended promotion this time” says Shelter Superintendent, Justine Middleton. “One of our main goals for 2011 is to focus on what we need to do to make people want to adopt a cat from us, rather than get a “free” cat from a friend or neighbor.”

According to a release, the shelter is running the special because of an overwhelming increase in cats taken in this year. The shelter has taken in nearly 200 more cats so far this year than they had at this time in 2010.

“We hope to see what people are actually willing to pay to adopt our cats because we simply aren’t adopting out enough at the $60 rate,” explained Middleton. “All cats will be spayed or neutered before going home as well as vaccinated and microchipped, services that would cost over $150 at a veterinarian’s office. Come on by the Animal Shelter and experience the love these cats are ready to provide.”
