Pitas Mediterranean Grill coming soon to Dickson Street

The owners of Tangiers Mediterranean Food & Cafe plan to open Pitas Mediterranean Grill on Dickson Street.

Kosmos Greekafe may have moved away from the downtown area, but Mediterranean food soon will be served again at 540 W. Dickson Street thanks to another local restauranteur.

Tangiers Mediterranean Food & Cafe owner Stephanie Khaldi told us that she and her husband Mohammed plan to open a second restaurant in the Dickson Street space with a new name, but a very similar menu to what they currently serve at their College Avenue location.

The new place will be called Pitas Mediterranean Grill, and if all goes according to plan, it will be open next month.

The expansion kind of came about by accident.

“Our landlord told us that he would be selling our (current) building, so we started looking for a new space,” Khaldi said. “We signed the lease (on the Dickson Street location), and then found out our landlord would not be selling our building, so we decided to keep both places.”

Khaldi said that the opportunity to continue to serve their current customers on College Avenue, and the possibility attracting a new following on Dickson Street contributed to their decision.

“I’m pretty excited, but nervous at the same time,” she said. “I”m glad we can stay open on College for our regulars.”

The building on Dickson Street will not require a lot of renovation, Khaldi told us.

“We just have to put in new tables and chairs, and hang some new photos and decorations,” she said. “Hopefully we’ll be open by early September.”
