It’s several months away, but if all goes according to plan, a new tapas bar will open on West Avenue sometime this winter.

Three friends, Wilson Wood, Lane Coleman, and Knox McCorquodale, are working to develop an upscale establishment called The Citizen in the space at 326 N. West Avenue in Fayetteville (most recently occupied by Sunrise Cafe).

The concept for the bar is still in the very early stages, but Coleman said the name is a nod to the history of the building.

“It used to be called Citizens Dry Cleaning and Laundry, and you can still see the name on the brick on the north side of the building facing Watson steet,” Coleman said.

The three were hard at work clearing out the space when we stopped by Thursday night.

Wood said that they hoped to be able to open up the front of the space with some large doors or windows, and are checking into the feasibility of a rooftop patio for the building.

“We signed the lease yesterday, so we’re just getting started” Wood told us. “We’re going to shoot for having it open by January, but we’ll see what happens.”
