SoNA to perform Masterworks II concert Jan. 21

Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, or SoNA for short, is set to perform Saturday, Jan. 21 at Walton Arts Center.

The symphony, conducted by new music director Paul Haas, will play Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 3 in D Minor, and Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 5 in D Minor.

Pianist Sergei Babayan will fill in for Ching-Yun Hu on piano, after Ching-Yun suffered an injury just weeks before the scheduled performance.

“When we found out late Monday that pianist Ching-Yun Hu had been injured and wouldn’t be able to play the solo part in SoNA’s performance of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3, we knew we had to find a replacement artist, and fast,” Haas said. “It’s a testament to the entire SoNA staff and organization that we ended up – less than 24 hours later – with one of the hottest performing artists on the circuit today: Sergei Babayan.”

KUAF’s Kyle Kellams will lead a creative conversation with Haas immediately preceding the show at 6:45 p.m. inside the arts center’s Starr Theater.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Baum Walker Hall, and tickets for adults range from $25 to 45. Student tickets are available for $10, and tickets for children 7 to 17 are $5.
