Fayetteville police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place at 2769 Ida Lindsey Dr. inside The Greens at Lakeside Village apartment complex early Sunday morning.

In a news release issued over the weekend, police said they were called to the complex at around 2:45 a.m. after a resident discovered a man who had entered the apartment through a window. According to police, the resident, who was armed with a handgun, ordered the intruder to leave. The intruder complied, but authorities said he re-entered the apartment through the same window a few minutes later.

Police said the resident fired a handgun striking the intruder, who then died at the scene.

During the initial investigation, police said officers determined that the intruder lived in the same apartment complex and had possibly attempted to enter the wrong residence.

Neighbors in the area told a 40/29 reporter the intruder was known to lock himself out of his apartment and frequently used the window to let himself back inside.

Police said the investigation will continue and further information will be released when it is available.
