This week’s beer: Bully! Porter from Boulevard Brewing Co in Kansas City.

Bully! Porter pours black like a proper porter should. A dense creamy head lingers and leaves a thin lacing down the side of the glass.

The aroma has a burst of dark malt and maybe even a whiff of hops. Its flavor is wonderfully complex with dark malts dancing across the tongue. It’s hoppier than most porters I’ve tried or brewed, but with this beer it works. With each sip it gets smoother and tastier and the last sip in the pint is the best of all.

Overall, this is a wonderful porter with its own identity and style. It stays true to its base style while making its own statement.

Boulevard has been brewing in Kansas City since the 1980s and has obviously gotten its techniques down pat.

As a year-round offering, Bully! Porter is definitely worth checking out.

Pair with hearty beef stew or pork chops.
