The newly constructed youth tennis courts will open this week at Wilson Park in Fayetteville.

A court-opening celebration, set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, will include games, instructional activities and prizes provided by the city’s parks department and the United States Tennis Association. Prizes include junior-sized tennis racquets and free registration to next month’s Summer Tennis Camp.

The opening marks the completion of a renovation and resurfacing project of two full-sized tennis courts, one of which was converted into four 36-foot courts designed for children 10 and younger.

The project was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the USTA, along with additional funding for materials from the Arkansas State Tennis Association.

The grant was part of a nationwide initiated to keep children interested in tennis by helping communities build smaller courts that are more suitable for younger players.
