A ruptured water line near the Fayetteville square sent gallons of water flowing down Center Street Wednesday morning, causing some damage to the street.

City utilities director David Jurgens said a contractor working to install an electric or fiber optic cable line between the University of Arkansas’ Global Campus and East Square Plaza accidentally ruptured the 8-inch pipe at around 11 a.m.

Jurgens said the line was repaired by around 2:30 p.m., and that water services were restored to the businesses on the street. Clean up to the street was still underway as of late Wednesday afternoon, and some permanent repairs to a section of asphalt that buckled beneath the weight of the water would still be necessary, Jurgens said
