Center Street will close from College Avenue to the downtown square for a few hours next week while crews work to repair damage caused from a recent ruptured water line.

The road will close at 5 a.m. and then reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9 and Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Officials said a contractor boring under the street punctured an 8-inch pipe last week while preparing to run a fiber-optic cable from the University of Arkansas Global Campus building to East Square Plaza.

An estimated 80,000 gallons of water escaped causing asphalt on Center Street to buckle about halfway between College Avenue and the downtown square.

City crews repaired the pipe and laid a temporary street surface over the damaged area, but permanent repair is still needed.
