Razorback Road is set to be closed through Tuesday, Oct. 22 from Mitchell to Nettleship streets, according to a city news release.

Leroy Pond Drive will also be closed this week from Razorback Road to Clinton Drive while crews with Fochtman Enterprises work to install new water and sewer mains.

Detours will be marked at each closed area.

The work is part of a preliminary process needed to ready the area for the first phase of a planned widening of Razorback Road from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Leroy Pond Drive.

The $2.6 million project includes widening the quarter-mile stretch of road to four lanes with turning lanes and stoplights at Leroy Pond Drive, building sidewalks on both sides of the road, and closing several entrances along the east side of Razorback.

The project will be funded using a $1 million federal contribution and $1.1 million in federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) money distributed through the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission.

The city is expected to use Transportation Improvement Bond Program funds to split with the University of Arkansas the remaining $520,000 required local match.

Future phases of the project include continued widening all the way to Maple Street, and then east to Garland Avenue. Funds for the estimated $12 million completion of the project have not yet been identified.
