An expected winter storm brought a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet to Fayetteville Thursday afternoon.

By 12:30 p.m. nearly all area schools had closed for the impending winter storm, including all classes at the University of Arkansas.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning, with up to an inch of sleet predicted through Thursday night. The sleet is expected to be replaced by snowfall by early Friday morning.

At least 10 wrecks were reported Thursday morning on Interstate 540 in Springdale and Fayetteville due to slushy roads and ice patches that began to form on portions of the road surface (see road conditions map). As a result, officials are urging drivers to use extra caution on bridges and overpasses as temperatures continue to drop.
