A man was found dead Thursday morning after crews responded to a fire at the Hi-Way Inn motel in Fayetteville.

Sgt. Craig Stout, a spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department, said the flames were contained to one unit inside the motel, located a 1140 N. College Avenue.

Stout told reporters a cleaning woman first discovered the victim after opening the motel room door to find a man laying on a burning mattress.

Traffic was temporarily blocked just before noon on College Avenue between North and Oakwood streets while fire crews worked to extinguish the fire, which sent black smoke billowing from the roof of the motel.

By 12:15 p.m. the county coroner had arrived and crews had opened the southbound traffic lanes on College Avenue.

Stout said investigators have not yet ruled out the possibility of a homicide.
